When I first had mine done my Mom called me "mop head", my stepdad still does. I usually get good compliments though, but when I was co-oping in a grade 7-10 school I got a ton of stupid remarks from the immature ones. I've been called "Whoopie Goldberg".... go figure.
When I had dreads I got allot of shit for it... but I really didn't let it bother me it's my hair after all and I want hair peace damnit!
ppl always want to touch them which is annoying and they always ask dumb questions like do u ever wash your hair? My husband usually answers before I do and he hates dreads but loves mine since I started with just my hair no extensions like I tried a few years ago that was just gross! But I put up with questions to educate ppl and because I love my babies! Most ppl like mine and were really happy I was growing them back.
Yeah, I get questions too. Mostly the first question is "who did them?" or "where did you get them done?" like it's a salon thing or something. Then the stupid, standard questions start rolling in... "Is it gross not washing your hair for months?", "I hear you'll go bald if you have them too long.", "You have to cut them off after you don't want them any longer, right? That's the only way to get rid of them."
My Dad called me Tarantula because he said my dreads looked like the legs of the spider. When I got the tips of a few of my dreads bleached, my mother said I looked like a Porcupine. Other people just call me a druggie/stoner (I don't even touch any drugs). I also get the questions such as "your hair must be so dirty since you can't wash it, are you Rastafarian, can you hook me up with some weed, you're going to have to cut them off when you don't want them anymore right" etc.
You guys make me laugh.. the reasons why people diss you is probably because your dreads look nasty.. some people just dont have any business having dreads and should just give it up. I get compliments from everyone on my dreads. Unless you want to be made fun of, take care of your damn dreads. wash them re-twist and keep them pressed. Unless your a rastafarian or rock-star, your nasty dreads will continue to reinforce the dreadlock stereotypes
Ah excuss me Judgedreadz, who are u to assume we have nasty dreads I wash mine there are no fuzzies from blankests ect in them they are tight some are a little loss but they are forming. To make the remark that we must be dirty is bullshit and offensive with your attitude you are helping ppl make those dumb assumptions and we all know what assumption means. No matter how good your dreads make look you will always hear the horror story of someones "nasty" dreads funny I've never been one to judge ppl I really dont know. This forum is about support not bashing obviously you didnt read the rules.
most people like them, and i get all kinds of nicknames: rastaman, tarantula, mop, bob marley, dread etc etc. Ofc there are the ones i hear on the street talking like "i heard that you musn't wash your hair if you want dreads", "just look at that guy" and stuff like that.
Yeh, Im called Sideshow bob by yr 11 twats Also occasional comments like' hey *insert chav name here* you still allergic to dreads.
i haven't had any negative reactions in a long long time however the other day i was in the post office and was practically interrogated by a woman about my hair. she seemed pretty angry inside...actually i think i was picking up some jealousy vibes. she felt the need to give me a primary on how "black peoples' hair dreads". i just stood there and listened for awhile and then i finally said that ALL peoples hair can dread if you just let it happen...she couldn't believe that i didn't go to a salon...that my hair is indeed actually my real hair and not a weave. i joked with my sister that i'm going to have cards printed up with interesting dread factoids and my dread stats...that way i can just give people that when they start asking questions and we can skip that conversation all together.
