Mythopoetics, Men’s Rights and Guys

As many readers know, in my 5 years as editor of M.E.N. Magazine I became known as a "mythopoetic." As I began, it seemed like there were two "factions," mythopoetic and men’s rights. There were two magazines, M.E.N. Magazine and Backlash, each with their different appeal. The perennial issue we all faced, and continue to face, is how to reach a broader audience of just plain, ordinary guys leading real lives and dealing with real issues.

Then I got the contract to be the Forum Manager of the Men’s Forum on The Microsoft Network, or MSN. That was a bit of a struggle in itself. Women On-Line had a paid Forum Manager and staff, and Men’s was moderated by whoever was handy, most frequently a woman. But a man named Jim Bracewell, a man from the heart who founded the Orlando Men’s Council and created the Florida Men’s Gathering, put his stake in the ground—and told me about it. So there’s now a "male-positive" space on one of the major on-line services.

It’s been a fascinating and challenging experience, that has taught me a lot about what’s on a lot of guys’ minds and how hard it is to talk about it. We haven’t been talking about sports, sex and cars. Most of the men aren’t interested in the "men’s movement" or any "men’s rights causes." But when one guy started to say something "politically incorrect" the message he posted to the continuing-discussion Bulletin Board would be smothered with a bunch of replies about women’s issues. And when one guy started to post about being a battered husband, all the folks wanted to talk about is how men battered women. It didn’t feel like a male-positive environment.

We set a Forum rule against misandry, and that caused a controversy. At least a lot more people learned a new word for "male-bashing," one that’s as respectable as "misogyny." After a lot of hard work, that looked like one of Michael Meade’s "conflict hours," we created a space where men could speak their minds. And when a woman told a story about a guy who was so obnoxious she just had to slap him silly, she was astounded when a lot of men said, "but there’s no excuse for violence." A lot of women heard the message, and the double-standard involved, and started to think. They are now very supportive when a man talks about the chest-to-belly-button knife scar his ex gave him. I was astounded at the number of guys, who aren’t "mythopoetic" or "men’s rights," who told the same story.

The guys there don’t talk about drumming, and don’t talk much about poetry. But they do talk about circumcision, "victimhood" as a way of life, what happens when a wife of two decades walks out the door because she’s "not fulfilled," and what it feels like to put Dad in a nursing home. And how Domestic Court has screwed up their lives. The women, who have horror stories of their own, are starting to agree with the guys.

There are philosophical discussions, too, and a lot of silly banter. But what really strikes me is that what the guys on the Forum are looking for is the same thing that the guys at Wisdom Council, the men’s rights activists, readers of this magazine, and a lot of other guys are looking for. A place to tell their stories and speak the experience-wisdom of their truths, in the company of other men, in a way that they can be heard. So they can make a difference in their own lives, in the lives of others, and in the society in which they live.

 

you know, all that stuff would be AWESOME to talk about with someone mature enough to do it without referring to every woman as cunts, bitches, morons, blah blah blah fucking blah. my GOD, what a wonderful place this would be if you grew out of puberty and starting talking like a freaking grown up. speak your peace, but quit calling women retarded cunts or you'll be treated exactly like you deserve.

 

No one deserves an abusive spouse or partner. Violence is not right, even for a woman to slap a man, although I ask why the woman slapped the guy anyways- Was he just being annoying? This is not an excuse to hit another person. If the guy was grabbing her or otherwise getting physical w/ her, I can see the reasoning, but I still don't think that is the best solution (but this is my opinion, not everyone would agree).

Violence is despicable, no matter who the victims and the aggressors are. I don't think gender should play a role at all, b/c violence is wrong, no matter what gender you are.

you know, jharyn, if you become a site supporter, you can create a private forum where you can ban anyone you like from discussing anything at all. that would include me. wouldn't that be fun? then you could have exactly the atmosphere you want. one where no woman gets to read what's going on and try to relate on a personal level, compare experiences, learn about your life or discuss differences. since our self female souls are obviously void and our opinions and interest is clearly only a ruse to annoy you.

 

The title of this thread looked intriguing to me but what I have skimmed through of it fails to intrigue.

 

sorry man, i have a hard time staying on track when someone accuses ALL women of being barking slits when i put so much effort into being one. obviously there's a problem to be addressed, but not by someone with zero credibility.

 

I haven't referred to all women. Which is what feminists usually default to acussing men of doing. I'm only referring to the ones in this thread who refuse to allow the men in here to discuss these issues.

I have read yours and I see two faces. You need to pick one. Read mine again. It IS what this thread is about. It's a shame that I see posts by you that appear toshow that you do see the problem. But then you default back to the other face you wear. It's sad.
The anti-male bias is so blatent in our society that I have a hard time believing that most people can't see it. I think that most people, especially women, just don't care.
The younger generations are being cornholed in to this ridiculous idea that men and women are equal. We are NOT! We are too different to be equal. But, when you put the two of us together, you have the perfect unit.
When I hear so many women puke out the line "I don't need a man to raise a child", I hear a selfish little princess who completely disregards their own children. Kids need both parents but the majority of women who I've come accross are not worthy of motherhood. AND, the boys who have been raised by single mothers are no better. They make the worst fathers I've ever seen.
Remember, there's no "WE" in independence.

when a woman brings up her personal experience in regards to an experience related by a man, it's her way of saying "i can relate, i hear you, people are fucked up."

I've had someone call the cops because I was pushing my kid while she was on the swing. That's what it's like in america right now.
