    A chapter from my book:

    December 24, 2003

I had a dream this morning that seemed significant.
The first thing I remember was being inside a building with a high ceiling in which I was floating or flying through the air. I was having some difficulty staying afloat and gaining altitude, and then I remembered that I needed to put aside my doubts and simply believe that I could fly. I say “simply,” but of course having unquestioning faith in something so supernatural may not be simple at all. However in the dream I was able to easily shed all my doubts in an instant, and suddenly I went soaring to the ceiling.
I came back down to the floor, thinking about the limitations of the ceiling, and wanting to go higher. I thought about going outside and soaring high into the sky. It occurred to me that if I got very high in the sky and then started doubting myself, I could plunge to my death. This thought prompted two others. One thought was respect for all those who had had the courage and faith to fly before me. I don’t know who these others were, but in the dream that was the thought I had. The other thought was that even if I did have doubts and started to fall, if I was very high it would take so long to hit the ground that I would easily have time to get my faith back on track in time to resume control.
With these thoughts I went outside and rose quickly above the buildings and into the sky. Suddenly I was stopped by a solid surface. I realized with some surprise that there was a huge ceiling over the town. I went back down to the ground and told somebody (I don’t know who), “There’s a ceiling over the entire town!” The person I said this to told me that yes, this fact had just been discovered, and I suddenly saw where some workers and machines were dismantling the giant covering at one place, and the sun was shining brightly through the hole.
The person went on to explain that the giant fictitious sky had been foisted on us by “important dead people.” He explained that important dead people had been in control for many generations. He said there had been dead people in important positions all the way back in Salem, Massachusetts during the witch trials. In the dream, I wasn’t sure what “important dead people” could mean, and I had vague thoughts of people lying in graves in charge of the government. However on considering this after waking, it was instantly clear to me what “important dead people” means.
I resolved to go immediately to the place where the false sky had been removed so that I could genuinely soar high into the sky, as had been my original intention. As I started walking, I heard piped-in music, such as you hear in the supermarket. The song that was playing was “The Boxer,” by Simon and Garfunkel. I was in an exuberant mood, and I started carelessly humming a loud harmony to the song as I walked. At this point, I found I was walking with Christine, a woman I had worked with at DCFS on a programming project, who seemed to like and respect me. We walked through a doorway, and she made a remark about my singing hurting her ears. I said I was sorry, and that maybe I could have sung one of the notes a little sharper and another note a little flatter. She asked me what I had been singing. I told her I had been singing a harmony to the song that was playing. “What song?” she asked. Then I realized that she had not even been aware that a song was playing, and was probably not aware enough or musically talented enough to realize that I was actually accomplishing something with a minor degree of musical sophistication, and she just thought I was singing something rather badly. I explained to her that there had been a song playing, and she asked if I could sing it for her.
By this time we had come to a large, landscaped plaza with benches. She sat down on one and lit a cigarette (she doesn’t smoke in real life, this seems more like something Deanna would have done, but seemed natural in the dream). I stood about twenty feet away from her and proceeded in the dream to sing the entire song. I remember singing the last verse two times, the one that goes like this:

In the clearing stands a boxer,
and a fighter by his trade,
    and he carries the reminders
of every glove that’s laid him down
or cut him ‘til he cried out
in his anger and his shame,
“I am leaving, I am leaving!”
    But the fighter still remains.

Christine joined with me in singing the “lie-la-lie” chorus. It was still in the back of my mind that I needed to proceed to the cleared area so I could soar into the sky, and I was completely confident that I could do so, but at that point I woke up.

Frequently, in South Station, I pass by people asking for money. My justification to myself: I can't help everybody, I'm barely getting by myself, I don't even know if their problems are real or an act, somebody else will help...you know the drill? On the other hand I've occasionally gone out of my way to help somebody who seemed genuinely in need, and handed a few people a $20 bill...I've been down myself - and may be again, you just never know. Circumstances can change in an instant without warning - even if you do everything "right."

Have you ever declared bankruptcy or gone on welfare - or "the dole," as the Brits call it? If so, what circumstances led to that result?

yes i do... BT once sold me 3 phones for a business i had started but then proceeded to really fuck it all up, then they had the audacity to tell me that they were going to stop the mobile because, they said, i hadn't paid the bill on time... tried to tell the geezer that this was not what i had arranged and that they couldn't do that... he said "madam, we can do what we like..." so i said, "well, i hope you can whistle!"... hung up and never paid the bill and never intend to... this was some years ago now and it has probably been written off as a bad debt.. they'd be almost right there then... more like bad business :D

have you ever had a business go completely tits up?

Yes, and I still have him. He is a rottweiler and his name is Chico Junior.

Have you ever done something really weird or awkward because you thought nobody was watching, but then it turned out there was somebody watching? If so, what were you doing, and what were the general repercussions?
