^^ inclined to agree. Remo, or reheading your drum with a remo head, is the easiest way to go vegan. THat combo, mike, is basically what the Remo formulation is. I met a man who toyed around with making drums and he used a "vinylized" paper strengthened with plastic fibers that came from (insulation, I think).
I play skin drums and they feel and sound the best for me. My family is from North Africa and the drums there are called "Dar Bouka" and translate into: "Your fathers house". The skins are from goat and sheep out here and the animals were raised by poor shepherds living in the hills. The animals were not mistreated, and when they were killed all parts were used. I would never see these people who are close to the land as evil because they can live in harmony with nature, and also maintain a symbiosis with the herd. Give and take... If someone doesnt want to play a skin drum good for them, and someone who wants to play an artificial head good for them...
plants die for you (and i) i think its important for us to be greatful to those plants and honor them, just as its important for people who use animals to be thankful and honor them. you can make your own drumheads from roadkill or get skins from hunters or taxidermists, butchers. parts that would be thrown away could be honored as a part of your drum.
syntn and skin also behave differently in different atmospheric conditions. Synth will retain the closest sound with minimal tinkering. a blessing when traveling or touring. I started drumming in humid areas and moved to high desert-high plains and ONLY the synths were ready to play to bless the house. I remember a man who made a drumhead from the bladder bag from boxed wine. It sounded good, if a bit bright, but I do not know the lifespan on such material.
