It's great to hear about you other folk's havens.

We've lived in quite a few hippy homes in our time. Our oldest son was born in our teepi and we spent years in a 12X16 cabin in northern California.

We are currently building and living in a 30'X30' frame cabin/house in the wetlands (frozen now) of interior Alaska. While we used some engineered forest products for joists, rafters and sheathing, most of the wood for the foundation and framing is rough cut lumber harvested from our 10 acres and milled by a neighbor.

We have no grid power and rely on solar and a generator for our minimal power needs. In the summer months we get so much sun we have more power than we can use, while in the dark months a generator is used to charge our battery bank to run the inverter for lighting and such.

It's cold here (20 below right now) so we had a substantial investment in insulation. We heat and cook solely with wood during the winter. Our winter water is hauled from a spring with either our 7 dog team and sled or by a snowmobile, or we melt snow. We have an out house.

We have been building out of pocket so it's been a slow process. The exterior is still wrapped in house wrap (tyvek) until we can procure proper siding and the loft in uninsulated and unused, but it's ours and not the bank's.

    Peace
