I still haven't worked out why you had to beat a raccoon to death. Did you pull it away from the bird in such a way that it got injured and it was kinder to finish it off? Or was it cheaper to kill it rather than scare it off and thereupon make plans to deter or trap it should it return?

I challenged anyone to interpret your post because I didn't understand it and was pretty much certain that no one else would, either. And judging by the response of another poster, I don't feel that I am out of line when I tell you that it doesn't make sense (to me). Perhaps if you would paraphrase that post, I would have something to say about it, but as it currently stands, I don't.

I didn't have to, and you don't have to, I took care of it.
This particular raccoon had been foraging on the property for some time and it took a good deal of time to figure a way into the coop. He had attempted entry and left evidence of it for weeks. Once it did get in, it was very reluctant to give up it's prize. I did not grab the raccoon. I used a tool, club, to extend my reach. First blow rendered the coon unconscious and obviously badly damaged. I used sufficient aim and force to prevent the raccoon from turning on me or causing any damage to additional chickens in said close quarters.

I might add that the rooster survived to father chicks. The ornate and copious plumage of the bird, providing ample shock absorption, as every grasp of feathers Is a bite or claw that fails to find it's way to the soft tissues of the body.

There was another raccoon that night that witnessed said events and as I laid the carcass out overnight where he/she could inspect, it seems that my joint
proved to appear not so palatable to the raccoonish kind. Raccoon visits stopped for a considerable period.

thedope is noble. He asks that we look away from ugliness, that we let it pass from perception. He is also muddle-headed. He does not mean to accuse those who accuse, but can't help it, as he holds his good in demand. I have met raccoons. I could have gotten it out without killing it, and saved your bird too. If you really had taken care of it, rather than killing it, I might not now have come to the conclusion you are cheap, at least in the "straight up appreciation of life" department.
