Great minds, and people who actually got somewhere did not spend hours behind a televison or playing a stupid game.

I too was a young girl addicted to Ultima Online, which was a great RPG but it was futile. There I am spending hours on some dumb character when I could be building myself. Oooh! Im a grandmaster swordsman on a freaking game! Yippe! Oooh Max just beat the Boss guy! Wow! Your thumb muscles are so powerful.:p Go out and do something. Seriously. You sitting here and defending this is like an obese person defending their gluttony. However Max, I can totally understand where you are coming from! I spent 3 years of my life on some dumb computer game. I came up with all the logical excuses about how it made me more intelligent blaha bhahbhah bah bah bah *turns into a sheep for minute*

It doesnt always cost money to improve. To actually go out, and do many of those things that you simulate on a flat screen.

Max: And maybe someday with his knowledge of the actual game of football (you know, what the player's don't have) he's received through training sims (i. e. video games), that kid will be the college coach who gets to piss on the dreams of athletes who do nothing but play football and rip on the kids like him, who watch TV and play videogames.

Just look at this statement. Are you kidding me?? That is raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaare out of any person who plays video games!!! I doubt he is going to be football coach when he is 25 and not even school!

That's great, but how many athletes and actors actually make it big time, and how many are stuck working as bus boys who can't do shit with their lives because they were too obsessed with unrealistic dreams? Find out how that fat kid who plays football games all day does in school, I bet his GPA better than the entire football team's combined. Only the most naturally and genetically blessed humans can even begin to hope to become professional athletes and actors, the rest who believe the bullshit "follow your dreams" mentality that you put forth are stuck in the land of make-believe, thinking that they could do whatever they wanted as long as they work hard, when in fact reality is far harsher.

Wrong. They werent following their dreams, they were going home like you and following someone elses. I really think that most people can do anything if they believe. Although plenty of people are too lazy, and blame it on this big bad hard world that they created themselves...They were too busy watching tv, and playing video games to make it happen.

Genocide, and famine? Perhaps there would be less of these atrocities if we were not watching family sitcoms, and jacking off to porn.

Instead, people like me and that who play videogames (all the while gaining progressive and systematic thinking skills, logical reasoning, prolonged planning, and the ability to multi-task) and learn to use our heads instead of having them in the clouds or up our asses get to become successful in life, while 99% of the jerckoffs who "followed their dreams" get to bag our groceries and flip our burgers.

BLUE WHALE SHIT! Your insane over the tv, and games you cannot not even see. I am not going to put too much energy in this one. Alot of those hard working people did not have a chance, and unfortunately spent their time blankly staring at the box. We can blame it ON THIS SOCIETY that we have created, that we are stuck in.
Manifest your destiny....You can keep working your corporate job, pretending to play a polygon samurai, and feeling good with your porno bliss....Whatever.

BTW: Deep down you just need to find another human to love and to relate to. And if you do have someone, you need to spend more time with them.

    Peace

LaughinWillow--That was a very interesting and thoughtful post. I'll grant you that I myself have not always had the easiest time ungluing myself from the boob tube. And to succumbing to some of the insidious advertisements.

I am curious, what have studies said about theater projected films versus tv? I hear a lot of flak about violent movies and such, but, does it actually make a difference in how you've actually viewed it in the first place?

<<On top of all of this, television presents our children (and we adults, as well) with warped, often dysfunctional notions about reality. Not only do we have commercials, which tell us we are too fat, too ugly, too smelly, too out of fashion, too old, too poor and generally unloveable as we are - the programming itself is comprised by a disturbing array of "reality" shows, "good cop" shows, cartoons (usually matched to a dazzling array of consumer products), fake corporate "news," "soap operas," and perhaps most bizarre - shopping networks. Virtually none of these programs provide any real cultural enrichment, personal understanding of complex social issues, nor do they encourage critical thought in any way. We are presented with body images we cannot hope to live up to, racial profiles that cause increases in racist social stereotypes in "real life," ridicule of that which does not conform to mainstream consumer norms, and political debate which does everything but actually concentrate our attention on the real issues at hand.>>

I agree with this too. And this is part of why I don't really miss my tv. I still have one, but only get one station now that I no longer have cable, and don't even bother with that. I got really tired of nothing but mindless drivel for the most part. I absolutely refused to partake of "reality shows" and the like. So, I opted eventually to drop cable. Although I too am a massive Law & Order fanatic! *LOL*! That was the only thing I watched on tv--endless reruns of Law & Order! :H

One of the nice things about cable though, were some of the learning channels. Like the History and Discovery channels. It all depends really on what you watch I guess. There are actually some good things out there, they just get really hard to locate amongst all the crap.

<<ON TOP OF THIS, television further separates us from our family members, neighbors and communities, wastes hours upon hours of our terribly finite time on this planet, divides us from nature, and numbs us to the terrible scam the ruling elite is carrying out on this planet (which is just another reason they LOVE for you to sit and watch).>>

The irony of my getting rid of cable, was that I wound up spending the time I would've spent in front of the tv, in front of the computer instead! Which originally seemed like substituting one bad habit for another. But, the thing of it is, that I was actually interacting with people over the internet. I was, in my own quiet way, reaching out to people and actually making new friends. And some of these new friends (and some of my older ones too) have given me a greater appreciation for nature and our fragile planet.

To those of you that don't want your tv's, lemme know, I'll take them. Also, If you are throwing out pc's as well, I'll take those. Used to play UO? Go ahead and pm me your user name and pw for the game, I'll play your acount.

I find the time to play with my son, spend quality time with my wife, play games, talk on here and work. Oh yeah, and I watch a little TV.

TV does not ruin your life. Just like a gun doesn't kill you....that is, unless you pull the triger. Point is, if you are a parent, set aside some time for your child to watch the shows he likes. Don't let them watch the shows you don't agree with. Pick a day in the week where the whole family goes to the park or something. But OMG to say that TV is ruining our lives...that is a bit drastic. If you don't have the inteligence to understand real life from tv life(or game life for that matter) then you need help. My son is 7 years old. He loves to play this game called Counter Strike with me. Up until a few days ago I kinda just thought he understood the consept of a game. Until he said to me two nights ago that when he wanted to grow up he wanted to go into the war. I pulled the car over and asked him why he said that. He said "I dunno, I guess cause it will kinda be like Counter Strike. The Good guys against the bad guys." At that point, I explained to him what war was. I explained to him that in real life the round doesn't start over after you die. I told him that real bullets hurt really bad. I asked him if he had any questions in reguards to games and real life. The only thing he wanted to know after that was "Why do we fight in wars then if people get hurt?". I love the innocence of my child. I explained to him in a short answer about the greed of man and the need to defend ones self and family. When I was done, I asked him if he understood that games and movies were not real. He said yes. 10 min of talking to my son and no longer does the game warp his sence of understanding. To bad the rest of the world can't be as caring and understanding with their children. Then we wouldn't have to hear about stories of children playing GTA and going out and killing people.

So, like a drug the act of playing games and tv can harm you in a sence, but you have that choice to let it affect you. If you are a parrent, it is your responsability to teach your child the difference between real life and pretend life.

    PS,
I am serious to those of you that played UO before. I dont' care what shard you played, I can transfer the chrs to Catskills. PM me the info if you don't mind.

Im mostly concerned for the kids whose parents don't communicate with them. What would 11 more years of the same habits with no parental discussion about them do to your kid do you think?

He'd be 18 and ready for war!!

That coupled with the military having access to public school records for recruiting purposes and we'll have the next generation of soldiers in not time!

Its already started. Department of Defense teaming up with video game makers. Last I checked, that was my tax money, and I didn't get a vote to spend the money on this, let alone know it was happening until recently. . .

And I am held in awe by your condescending, quazi-intellectual berating of others on an online forum. Next time you have to kindle your inferiority complex, do it to someone you can see face to face.

I find it intersting how you decided to omit this part of my post:

Unless you have a disease cousing you not to hear what you don't like, you'd see that I clearly don't spend my entire life in front of a screen playing a game. IT'S A FUCKING HOBBY. When I hvae free time, I play video games and watch television. Is there anything wrong with that?

I couldn't care less what you think of my hobbies.

You tell me to go out and do something, but I'm doing something already. What's the point of having a hobby if you don't enjoy it? I don't enjoy exercise, jogging, or most sports, and I'm not overweight so I don't need them. I have absolutely no intention to become a sword fighter or a medieval knight, or anything else I've done in a video game. See, games are get this: F-A-N-T-A-S-Y. Meaning that in real life, nothing I do in a videogame would be feasible, or even much fun for that matter.

Are you kidding me? Coaches and players spend a shitload of time playing games, especially during the off season. And how would you know how successful people who play videogames are? Games have only been semi-mainstream now for 5 or 6 years, hardly enough time for the kids who play them to finish school and find real jobs.

I'm confused. Following someone else's dream? What do you mean by that? And to think that anyone can do anything they want (in the sense of beoming an athlete or actor) as long as they try hard is bullshit, and only shows how naive you are.

Only the top 1 or 2 percent of prospective actors and athletes actually make it big. You think only 1 or 2 percent try hard enough? Athletes and actors who bust their asses working as hard as they possibly can are turned down with their dreams crushed every single because they just aren't good enough, not because they don't try hard. Being successful with your head only takes a fraction of the effort that being successful with your body does, and it's a much safer bet.

......what? You're saying that genocide happens because people are too bust masturbating?

Like I said, people who have tried hard their entire lives and never picked up a videogame controller are rejected every day. People set unrealistic goals, thinking they can do whatever they want, and get crushed when reality catches up to them.
That's life. I'm doing what I can, putting as much effort as reasonably possible into academics while keeping time to enjoy my hobbies so I don't go insane. But you seem to have something against that, which I don't understand.

    I will, thanks [IMG].

Sooooooo, just because I play videogames must mean that I'm socially inactive and unloved?
