    Oh yes!!

That makes you the best, the sanest, and by far the healthiest kind of Hippy.

Yes in fact it's a very good thing to NOT use drugs.

Sunsets, serenity, joy, love, inner peace and (healthy, non-addictive) fun all beat the heck out of drugs.

We don't need a 'drug war', but we don't need drugs either.

I think it's sad that you even have to ask this question.

I'm an old lady, and I'll tell you something ... I don't know anyone my age who looks back and says "wow, wish I'd taken more drugs when I was younger."

You can be a hippie if you do not take drugs, sure

    BUT

    - not a big hippie
    - or a hard hippie
    - or a clever hippie

Well my grandfather was a Beatnick, and my parents were Hippies. What I learned was that "Drugs" were an accessory not a necessity. There were hippies coming around that smoked dope and ones that didn't. My parents didn't shield me from drugs like the other kids my age. I remember when Jolt Cola came out ("Real Sugar and Twice the Caffene") in Maine. One of our neighbors had a heart attack at 35 from doing too much blow. My parents were honest with me about it. The Republican, Banker, Church Deacon next door told his kids that the guy had a heart attack "From drinking to much Jolt Cola."

I had an uncle that dealed coke and did time for it. I had two uncles who ended up addicted. My family was open and honest about it. It was an important lesson to me about the consequences of ones actions. To this day I don't do anything stronger than pot and have only done acid once. With the exception of food and strong coffee anything I put in my body is not 100% necessary. If I don't drink I'm still me. If I don't smoke pot I'm still me. I'm a hippie with these substances. And I'll be a hippie without them.

    Peace Out,
    Rev J

who were overtaken by their alcohol/drug use and are either dead or in prison for a long, long time. Drugs are a personal thing. My drug of choice used to be "whatta ya got?" Today I'm clean and sober for 12 years and everyone I know still calls me a hippie. Be cool with whoever you are. Hippie is a state of mind, an attitude of peace & love. Sadly, still a subculture or the world wouldn't be in the state it's in today.

I don't do any drug except caffeine and the once in a blue moon alcohol & cigarette and I am indeed a hippy. I believe it's more of what you believe and your state of mind. Not if you do drugs or not.

When someone is doing a lot of drugs there comes a point where I stop thinking of them as a hippie and start thinking of them as a stoner or a druggie. I see a hippie as someone who does drugs but with a certain amount of moderation. I've also known people I considered hippies who didn't do drugs.

The fact that we even have to have this conversation is proof that the system is flawed. The hippie is still such a minority that is stereotyped in mainstream society that we still get these questions. I have mixed feelings when I see hippie charachters in movies or tv. We are portrayed as so fucked up on dope we can bareley function, flakey, stuck in the past, or over sensitive. If it's not that then we are all drug dealers or cult leaders (thanks Charlie) who want to pimp out 14 year old girls and cheat on our signifigant others in the name of "Free Love". I'm just glad the OP wasn't "Am I still a Hippie if I haven't been gang fucked in the back of a VW bus while tripping balls during a Satanic Ritual and listening to the Beatles backwards?" Fuck if we are going to fall back on cliches let's go hog wild with this shit and take it to it's logical conclusion.

    Peace Out,
    Rev J

Drugs are,,, and always have been,,,, a method of control...Part of the myth of the Hippy set was in order to be a member, you had to take drugs, like an initiation into the world of cool.....You all know about the notoriuos "Powers that Be". They supply, you buy, they get rich, you don't. I have a feeling that the vast majority of posters here want to be, and claim to be Hippies. Because you are young, feel a bit awkward you know just don't fit in, you have decided to grow your hair long and take drugs just to be different.I have seen the music industry before it became an industry, use drugs as payment instead of money for band members to keep them inline and dependant on the managers and such.Drugs don't help your creativity aspect either.look @ Syd Barrett.
