They were the best Southern rockers - bar none - until the death of brother Duane in a motorcycle crash. That boy was one of the greatest slide guitarists to have ever walked the planet. (You do know that was him playin' dual-lead guitar w/Eric Clapton on "Layla", right?) Sure, Dicky Betts was/is good - when halfway sober - but he was never able to fill Duane's gunboats. And speaking of "anthologies", if you can find it, get "Duane Allman: Anthology". It'll really blow your doors off. It's a double album that came out in the early 70's. ("Dreams, "Statesboro Blues", "One Way Out", - awesome shit!)
I've got a large collection of 60s and 70s lp of pop-rock & psychedelic bands but The Allman bros still a mystery to me. I've just heard their 1st album (whipping post is a bomb) and their best of (the 71 fillmore is a classic but i never hear it)...and from what i hear i will probably buy their albums until 73's brothers and sisters LP's after like a lot of 70's band it's a band who lack of juice...probably the death of 2 important members(in the process of 72' eat a peach lp) and all this cocaine and heroin destroy them gently in the mid 70's so i will buy their 69-73 for sure....for some other albums in a decade maybe... sorry 4 my average english
I think their best material is from the debut to Brothers and Sisters. "Jessica" is my favorite. The greatest 7 1/2 minutes put on record. R.I.P. Duane & Berry
i don't wanna make a comparison between derek trucks and duane allman, but i am going to say that derek trucks absolutely OWNS the world of guitar playing... from THIS guitarists point of view anyway, there is no other than derek trucks
Be careful; Dickey tossed me and a friend out of his motel room cause we wouldnt put out....but that was a long time ago...at the spectrum in Phila., 1970, around Xmas time....Greg and Dickie and me and Alina was in the same limo...
