It most deffinetly was not meant to be pot related. Smoking weed out of a hookah is the most rediculous thing ever. Hookahs are for shisha and nothing else except sprinkled opium or hashish mixed with in. If you were to go to the middle east and pack a shisha bowl with pot people would think you are retarded. Hookahs are not meant for pot. But on the other hand, that is deffinetly my favorite scene, i find it the trippiest. I have tripped while watching this movie time after time and i still find it amazing the ways they tried to teach the children of that time.

When did hookah's come into existence? Tobacco is a new world plant and trade of it didn't reach the rest of the world until the 1500's. Assuming they existed prior to that, what did people smoke out of them?

Alice in Wonderland is one of my favorite Disney films, Mary Blairs art direction is great.

I haven't seen the disney version in quite a while the one i have stars Whoopi Goldberg, Martin Short, Ben Kingsley, & Gene Wilder among many others. I think it's the best version i've seen.

Well it isn't known for sure. But they have been dated as far back as a millenia ago. But the design was so much different than what we see today, almost not even comparable to shape or size or even the way it worked. And it was used for opium smoking and hashish smoking, the solid form. But again, it was used a completely different way with direct heat, opposed to the movie which used a more familiar form of hookah which is used with indirect heat and much different than its origin. Which was created for the use of shisha in the bowl, which is tabacco soaked in a wet mollasas. Where putting a full bowl of dried cannabis inside would burn completely different and waste much useful bud.

I LOVE return to oz!! not many people have seen that one!!

I have a copy of a version of alice in wonderland that was done back in '98 (i think). It came on like NBC or something, but it had everyone in there.....Martin Short was the Mad Hatter, Miranda Richradson as the Queen, Ben Kinglsey as the Catepillar, Gene Wilder as the Mock Turtle, Christopher Lloyd as the White Knight...and Alice is played by the girl who plays Deb in Napoleon Dynamite.

It's a really tripped out version...anyone else seen this one?

This was my favorite movie as a kid. I've only seen the disney one, and it's been so long. I dunno, there was something about it, so imaginative, so colorful, so trippy - even though I didn't know that word then. I can't wait to see it again. I'm gonna buy it!
I want to see the other versions. I did see parts of the one with Martin Short and that little girl from Waterworld, didn't like it, but maybe I didn't see enough of it.
I'm reading the book right now!!!

Totally a magical acid-trippy land full of weird critters. I love the Cheshire cat and the mad hadder. Love it! & the caterpillar toking off the bong just makes it better.

    LOVE this movie!!!
I love the part with the hookah smoking caterpillar :)

I believe the book was written for a little girl Alice, whom the author had like an obbsession with. Which is pretty creepy haha.

yea, the books were written for a little girl named alice. Lewis Carrol i believe his name was. He used to tell her and her 2 sisters stories, and take their pictures. I think some of them were nude pictures as well. But it was way back when, so i dont think it was as big of a deal as now. But yea, he was sorta creepy, and did obsess over her, she was apparently his favorite.

haha, it's kind of ironic how now it's a disney movie that a bunch of little kids watch.. & it was written by like a pedophile haha
