^no, it's something I picked up a long-ass time ago that always stuck with me, because I found it to be the most simple formula for happiness..
I don't believe in destiny. In my own view on the world, I feel that life has no big "meaning", and to believe it does is just deluding yourself. We (humanity) are just monkeys (ok, apes) who gained self awareness, and once we made that jump we couldn't accept that our existence is so insignificant and thus fairly pointless. So we search for the "meaning" behind our lives, because that gives us a reason to live. Yet the reality is merely that we're just overly intelligent beings no different from any others. It is denial. Even when you look at religions over time, they always make a point to set humanity apart and make us special in some way, whether it be that we were created in the image of god, or that we were created to be the caretakers of the world. Maybe we're just so self-centered we can't accept that we're not divine. The same thing can go with the idea that we have an afterlife. I mean, how could we accept that we are these god like creatures when we can just die like any other species. So now we get eternal life. Then again I may just be a cynic.
yes you are a cynic, and a fuckin smart one. Everybody needs cynicism, both the selfish definition and the pessimistic definition. It's simple yet bloody brilliant to look at the question "what is the meaning of life?.." and to rationally conclude that the meaning of life is life itself, duh. Life is an end unto itself, but that doesn't mean it has limits. If you defer your ultimate happiness to a place beyond the grave, that's the only place it'll ever be. If you look at life as a veritable heaven on its own, it will be one. And even though it's temporary, its virtues are infinite and one can feel like they are in a state of timelessness any time they want. That's what the mind and memories are for... our guardian against the insecurity of time.
