As a teenager, I know for a fact abstinence education does not work. If you plan on having safe sex before marriage, like me, then abstinence education does nothing. I come from a good family, but my parents never gave me "the talk" because they were too nervous or something. So if I hadn't taken the initiative to go online and learn about condoms and everything then I'd be completely ignorant to it all.

Sex ed needs to start early. I know girls who have gotten pregnant as early as the 7th grade, and even one who not only had a baby in middle school, but got pregnant again freshman year. True she had a mental handicap, but I think if someone had just TAUGHT her the consequences then things would have been different. If today's society is so sex driven, education needs to step it up to protect the children from ignorance.

Abstinence-based sex education is Bush's way of pandering to his base. Nothing more, nothing less.

I can't help but think of the "scared straight" programs where teens were taken to visit a prison and hear horror stories. Maybe abstinence-based sex education is "scared celibate."
