thar ye go.. http://www.hipforums.com/newforums/showthread.php?t=351050 i know its prolly not the route you wanna follow, and you dont want them fat like some of mine are, but just have a looksie and whatevz. itll give you an idea of how the first 3 weeks look
The pic in my signature was taken a few days ago and I'm just over two weeks into the dreading process. I started off with just backcombing. But, the entire underneath has fallen out because it was too short for the backcombing to hold. I suppose Icould have tried to keep it into the knots more, but they naturally spit out the backcombing cuz they're too short to start I think. I think the 3 - 4 inch rule is if you decide to use wax, but that's just my guess. Good luck!! You must be getting excited to get them in and started.
i really am, i have decided what i am going to do and what route i am going to try starting today. right now i am waiting on the babysitter so i am going to be seeing a later showing of watchmen, but once i get back i will be posting what i am doing and some pics of the process. til then, thanks for all the advice and all the help!
Thats what I was thinking, with hair that short the backcombs will be out by the first wash without waxing. But PLEASE dont go months without washing your hair!!!!! That is just nasty and not necessary!!!
opr crochetting that dudes crochetting to fix the mess not washings doing hes going about it alllll wrong ofcourse it can look right when u literaly sew the dreads togerther ..but then they are dirty nasty messes that have been dammaged and weakened not to mentuion must stink btw..emo kids i wouldnt think would klnow much about the right way to dread but then again ive successfully avoided ever talking to, or meeting one ever so couldnt tell ya..i only hear stories biut em and ..not so impressed with theyre wisdom
so i was wondering earlier today, if i section my hair (so i know what size the dreads will be) then just let it lock up by washing with the sea salt and the dread shampoo, about how long should the process take that way?
personally I think the dread shampoo sucks and smells bad. I cleaned the hair but didn't really do much for my scalp which the dirtiest part. Some people say its good or ok and it is but over time it just didn't clean well enough and caused buildup. I Bronners and baking soda are far better. They both making the cleaning process easier in my experience. As for how long... Hard to say. You will see dreads within 6 months but I think 2 years until they look like you envision them now(realistically). But as the process goes on your expectations changes and you'll look at them differently want different things out of them. So 6 months I would say and you will be well on your way. You have to start somewhere.
Dude whatever method you chose it is still gonna take time. Not as long going the back combing route..but until it matures it is still just back combed hair. You will not look like the guys in the pics you are posting for years. Until then you will look like the white snoop dog with your hair length...yep yep yep.
its always very hard to guess since ya got about minumum length (4-6 is reciomended for natural) so progress may be slow at 1st then again mine was shorter and pretty damn quick.. the progress will be visible daily if u know what youir lookiong for, but to mosty will just look funny awghile till the 1st real dreads form ya can go a couple weeks and see..or u can jump right in to backcombing or u can do something all together different like finger tease sections ..very much like backcombing but no shartp metal teeth grab and twist a section, pinch the end hard then just belotw the end less hard and with it twisted push hair towards the rootes till its as far as u can, then pull it all ouitwards retwist repush just till they seem to hold together then leave em be its possibly the best of both worlds giving it as lil jump start without being too agressive or dammaging it'll be loose somewhat so they'll dread faitly naturaly just have a lil bit ogf help holding together try it on a few post pics and lets see how it worked shiuld be odvios how well it will work from pics of 1 or 2
Ravin just FYI, Backcombing isn't really dammaging [sic] I know plenty of people who have backcombed with absolutely none of the problems SE seems to think are associated with the practice. Not sure why hes so obsessed with neglect but don't let scare tactics hinder your decision on what's right for you. Any route you take will be fine for your hair (backcombing, twist & rip, or neglect) unless you use rubberbands and don't take them out, or cake on wax. Good luck and post some photos of your progress! :cheers2:
Are you sure? He said don't wash for 3 months, and he didn't use wax, and has been washing since. So they're definitely "dirty nasty messes" yeh? Or did he say he used wax? As to the rest, I hope there aren't any emos here. Maybe if there are they'll start spouting about dirty stupid hippies soon, seeing as such judgements are apparently acceptable.
ah your right i was assummiontg they were in the 1st 3 months still ..or went on washing only every 3 months id gone ..hmm not sure..mightve been a month even maybe longer while traveling id gine way too ling without washijng and believe me ..it was gross actualy hmmwas probly only 3 weeks..but things got gross in a hurry i couldnt imasgine going 3 months withoyt washing just the buuild up from air polution alone would be really hard to get out (and can be kinda tar like as bad as wax if alowed to really build up) i cant stand how mine feel after a week and 1/2 and when im out in the woods for a couple weeks the very 1st thing i weanna do is wash my dreads and yea i bring oils with me cause i know 2 weeks withiout washing i stink.. amy..would u go 3 months without washing? would you ever tell someone else not to wash for 3 months?
I think we are all just wasting our fingers...this guy has already made up his mind on his method. He want dreads NOW and wants them to look a certain way. Im just curious how it will all end when he realises that it will take time and he will not look like the pics he has posted, that all dreads, even insta-dreads take a life of their own, so to speak.
It is his hair, he can do what he likes with it, you should listen to these guys though, there the ones who know, there not trying to make money off of you and at the end of the day they dont really know you, they just wanna help someone for the sake of helping. but they will still sleep at night either way good luck with the hair
Not everyone! Last week soaringeagle stayed up all night trying to analyse the effect of a needle on a dreadlock!
