well then it sounds like you have a good idea of what you want and how to get it :)
a little bit of wax isnt going to kill your hair. i would advise you to use less than the recommended m&m sized amount.
    good luck :)

    varius sizes maybe even natural
    1/2 inch not 1 over 3/4
bout 3/4 maybe some near 1 inch (fuck dreadheadhq, measure your wrist thats 2 inches, and too thicjk to clean easily)

1/4 to 1/2 most fairly thin
    well..lil over 1/4 1/3 to 1/2 i guess

Yeh maybe start on the slightly smaller side of what feels right. It will be easier to join a few dreads together later on than it will to split open ones which are too fat. I don't think you should start with anything bigger than approximately an inch. Also, lots of new baby hairs will sprout out between the sections as time goes on, and as they work their way into the dreads, the bases of the sections will change and grow a little.

I'd advise putting a little bit of thought and planning into your top layer of dreads and the ones along your hairline either side of your face, just in terms of distribution and how you want them to sit as they mature :)

Oh I forgot to ask...coz we were discussing this a couple of weeks ago, about research. Just curious about how you searched, like what search terms etc, and what you found other than DHHQ, how much info you found about the different sides of the wax argument etc. Where did you do your image searches? In a year or so of research you didn't find anything to give you a positive impression of growing dreads without a dreadkit to control things?

    good point

i said dreadheadhq and knottyboy are scams
in that year of research u maybe read 1000 sites like perfectdreadlocks howtomakedreads and hundrfeds of blogs and such that alllllll had 1 thing in common right all said get your dreadkit get your wax anfd had links to 1 of those 2 sites

look on those sites theres a lonk somewhere to the affilite programs they offer discounts on theyre hidiosly overprioced crap if u make a site advertising theyre misinformation and harmfull crap
    so
theres tens of thousands of sites full of lies misleading ppl into buying into theyre scam
that pushesall real info out of sight

how many sites dod u see that said all u need to dread is to throw away your comb?
how many tried to sell yiou nothing?

the images i found on google and photobucket. the wax thing, everything i found, even African hair salons said to use a little wax, the amount DHHQ says to use is about the size of a m&m but everyone has said that is too much. the sites and people i have talked to said just use enough wax to melt in to hold the hair together one day one then after that, dont use wax unless the hair comes completely undone. everyone site and person i have talked to as said that DHHQ shampoo is the best to use. a lot of people has told me that they used rubberbands to hold the dread together till they from but i decided against that, i am only going to use one at the tips of the hair til it starts locking. there really is not much information out there about how to get the size you want. the one thing that i do keep coming across is this
"1/2 to a 1 inch gives you an average size dreads"
but they never say what a average size dread is or what it looks like. i mean to me an average size dread might be bigger then a inch and to someone else it could be less then 1/2
this site has been the most help so far and i found it today when i typed in "determine dread size before dreading" into a google search. but hey, i am off to the store to see if i can get any aloe vera gel i will be back on later tonight again thanks to everyone

alot of the sites said that you needed nothing but about three years for your hair to dread it self but to be honest, my cousin went that route and i do not like the result.

    Well good luck :)

A good place for dready pics is flickr.com And if you find someone with your ideal dreads, you can just message them and ask how they achieved them etc :) If you just type in dreadlocks you may get photos people have taken of random strangers so they may not have any info on the person's dreads, but if you type something like dreadlock journey or dreadlock timeline, something like that, you'll find people's own dread photos and can ask about them maybe :)

It doesnt actually take that long to dread naturally, most around here will tell you it will start to dread in 6 to 8 months

What texture hair do you have. (Coarse or fine, curly or straight, thick or thin) That would help us to give you an idea of what size sections. I would say, to get locks the size you are looking for, I would not go over an inch in diameter, but its hard to say without knowing what your hair is like. Test it out by backcombing one with the dimensions you think will work, and if you're not going to use the wax, maybe water it down a little and palmroll it. However large it is then is a pretty fair approximation of what it will be like after it matures. As for using wax, there's a lot of controversy surrounding it but IMO wax can be used successfully if used very sparingly. Whichever route you go, its going to take patience. Good Luck!

Sorry if I am repeating anyone's response but too lazy to read through 6 pages.

Looks to me like you might wanna grow your hair out a bit more. Its gonna be a bitch getting a good backcomb from your short hair that appears to be maybe different lengths.

I started with a kit..mine are fine and I love them and I also want more of the kind dreadies you showed in your pics. If YOU decide to use the wax...use it as instructed and do not over apply. DHHQ's wax is a lot easier to work with and remove in my opinion.
You do what you feel is right for you and dont feel bashed for wanting more of the uniformed look. It is your head, your life, and you are the one who will be looking at them everyday.
So anyway...I would go with 1 inch sections. They will shrink...then fatten up with time.
    Good luck to you !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

wax used successfuly? hows that defined? meanning ya didnt have to chop em off and start over?
if thats the meanning ya it can be used wiyhout catastrophic results in some rare cases when used with utmost care..but
    why risk it
    it does absolutely nothing good
    only harm
so why would ya ever put any in

the elastics, take em out by day 3 ort eklse when u take em out yourt only unkotting knots
by a week they can be swallowed partialy, by 2 totaly vannish inside the dread to become a gross mess
your bertter off taking em off on day 1-2

anyuthing that holds hair inm place besides beads are counter productive (beads allow movement above below and somewhat within while keeping the dread from unraveling, and theres no chance they will be swallowed..peyote stitches have the added benifit of being soft and flexible,,and easily taken apart if u choose to remove em)

the aloe..if ya use it for day 1 fine it wont hurt and may help things lil early on, but also is conditioning so use just a lil bit and not often, save it fort when u need tiddiness or conditioning.

paklm rollued inthe 1st week tho it will priovide lil holding power while remainuing relativeky flexible ..and will rince right out 1st wash

    btw
was watching the watchmen and kept taking time out inthe middle ofit to answer these..
your best bet..when u backcomb have a few movies to watch while u do
    can be a slow process
your hairs not a whole lot so wont be 12 hours like some, but still can take hours
do it during tyhe movie not after just to be sure u got time to finnish

    what kinda concerts were they?
rock rap reggae jazz folk jam bands whateverfolow the leader right down the dreadheadhq opath reggae shows will almost all be natural (wether black or white) ahol infashgion dreads want em fast, they dont care if they choose to change to a mohawk or skinhead a year later, they think of here and now not forever so wouldnt think twicve about even using glue

im guessing if u talked to mostly headbanger kids types then yea youd get that result

Im not getting into another antiwax rant with you SE.

Wax did not harm my locks at all. I had no problems removing wax with shampoo and water. I have not tried aloe yet so I dont want to give any advice about anything I havent used myself, but I have read that it could cause new backcombs to loosen.

But then again I am the above mentioned headbanging type..holy shit!!!!

Poor guy came in and asked one question about section size ...lmao

lol. no headbangers, emo guys that have had their dreads for years and plan on keeping them for years. bands like Takingback Sunday, AFI, HIM, Coheed and Cambris, Thrice, and many more. bands that not many people really know on a main stream level. my bangs are the shortest part of my hair, about 4-4.5 inches, the rest is longer. i am torn about waiting til my hair is longer or doing it tomorrow. every person i have asked and sites i have seen all say the same, the shorter (about 3 inches) the better to start dreading the hair. so tomorrow is the day, if they are too short i will most likely wait a little longer but i have to say, i have been waiting at least 4 fours now to get dreads. b4 i had jobs that i couldnt even have long hair, had friends that paid $300 for me to cut my hair, and other things. right now i am a freelance animator so i work from home so NOW is the perfect time for me. i want to work for a company at the end of the year so i need to have my dreads started by then. the owner said if i already have them then they are fine but if i am just starting them, i will have to wait to work there

i never heard of an animation company that was like that, I have a friend who was an animator for 8 years before coming over to film production. Never had a problem there, your an artist man, your supposed to look scruffy. Its part of the job, too busy to shower is really how it is
