Kblaze The thing is ‘the conspiracy’ connects everything from Sumerian kings to 9/11 so there are not separate subject but parts of the same subject. Nalancer Recommends a book that claims ‘other-dimensional entities live and operate unseen among us”, controlling human events. Rat Believes (knows) that evil devil worshipping Zionist Bankers, control all the political parties in the world and have directed human history for generations. There viewpoints are very relevant for why they believe what they believe about 9/11, you cannot separate the two because they are part of the whole. The question I’m asking is – Why do people seem to find it easier to believe in these myths than to face reality? As I’ve said it just seems to me that conspiracy theorists seem to have an acute case of a condition that seem common. I mean if - in the US - a level of creationism is mainstream then is it surprising if some people on the fringe believe lizards secretly run the world or Satanists blow up the twin towers? I’ve been musing that it might be the nature of US society and culture, from the myths of the American Dream and American exceptionalism to believing in the celluloid history’s of Hollywood fantasy. Myths seem to be accepted in US culture even encouraged. That coupled with an inability to understand the purposes of free speech and debate seem to have led the idea that it doesn’t matter if something is real or fake. For many it is belief that is important, if you believe it is real and have faith in it being real, it doesn’t matter how far from the truth it is, it is somehow it is turned into reality. Could it be that conspiracy theorists are not non-conformists they are in fact the most conforming, the most perfect product of their culture, so completely lost within the myths of their own reality that they cannot see the real world at all.
Conspiracy theories were not invented in the US. Much of the Illuminati theories are borrowed from the Protocols, which were written in Russia. Jewish conspiracy theories have a long history in Europe. David Icke is British. Just as this lot finds everything lead back into the conspiracy, you find that everything leads back to the fact that you hate Americans and think they are idiots. You're as pathetic as they are.
Oh Point it’s so nice to have the natural order restored. As I’ve told you many times before (and you always seem to forget), this is mainly an American forum and I came here originally to learn about Americans and am still trying to unravel the mystery. I know that conspiracy theories are not an invention of the US nor are they limited to Americans, but they are more of a phenomenon in the US than they are in Europe. (try ‘A culture of Conspiracy’ by Michael Barkun). That is not to say we don’t have our own fringe groups over here and I am against those as well but since they don’t come here there doesn’t seem much point saying anything. (Although I think my views on religion are clear). Oh I know David Icke is British, I remember watching him when he was a sports commentator and have actually once bumped into him on a train. Rather than hating Americans and thinking them all idiots I have great affection and respect for many of them (are you not American, I know you live in London but I always thought you were?). But come on Point you also seem to despair of some Americans at times and you’ve done your own fair share of name-calling. As to the theory of the strong element of belief in myth in US culture, again you seem to be attacking me for bringing it up not actually disputing it.
Balbus I do concede that I may be wrong, as I said. I do not believe I am, but I do not rule it out. I know anything's possible. That being said, I will recommend the book to you again. I think you should just read it and decide what you think after you've seen his evidence. I think it's compelling. Then feel free to rebut it.
Sorry to detract, but... Balbus why do you have an anarchy sign as your avatar? and... I would say some people connect the New World Order to the Reptilian Theory, but I do not, therefore, when I argue about the NORAD stand-down, it doesn't make sense to bring in lizards.
Sure, whatever you say. And Rat doesn't hate jews, he just thinks they control the planet and were behind the holocaust (at least those parts that weren't "hugely over-exaggerated or "completely made up"). Why don't you try hanging out at left wing sites in Europe? I think you'll find conspiracy theories are quite popular. I mean if I took your logic, by looking at HipForums and extrapolating, we can conclude that communism is widely popular in the United States. Do you think this is true? No, because you are only looking to confirm your prejudices.
