Hello, this isn't a formal application but it is an inquiry. I'm very interested in communal living and have been for many many years now. I have no experience with it and have no farm experience I can think of off hand. I do however have a strong sense of community and a love of people. I'm not afraid of hard work by any means and love the outdoors. I would really enjoy conversing with you or someone from your organization about your IC. While I'm not skilled or experienced, I've never come into any workforce, event, group, etc and not excelled at what I was doing. I don't get mad about little things and as long as my basic needs are being covered..... I'm straight. I'm a very simple person who wants to get back to the basics of life. Even if it's not with your community I would appreciate speaking to someone who could possibly help guide my path, even if it's just a friendly suggestion. So lemme know what's up mcalohan@gmail.com

Hey Spirit, when ya' going to get some more photo's of the place up here, Leaves will be changing color soon.

Trying to get it in gear here and gather some more traveling "essentials" beyond my shower bag, a few books and my clothes but the Dude I'm renting the room from here drinks way too much, gets bitter and rides everybodies ass till he passes out, usually by Corona #20... We'll see how long I can tolerate this crap... But there's an amazing lack of rideshares that way on Craigslist so I'm gonna shoot for grabbing that truck still.

Workin' on it. I'll keep ya' updated.

Hey everyone, keep in mind that when you visit, you have somewhere to go after the visit, and the means the get there... we can only sustain a few people at a time and there are five people here, six when one's boyfriend comes over.
Again, we are a newly forming commune and have limited reserves, bring what you can to help out and support yourself for the most part... but don't worry, we won't let you starve.
    Peace

Hi ! I am new to this site.name is Steve. I have been reading over most of the forums in the past few days and reviewing most of my options. Your offer sounds very exciting to the community. I was wondering on how the people are where you are at your community ?

Is everyone pretty easy going ? Nice to be around ? I am a person who loves to smile, laugh, and make those around me feel the same. I have been setting a date to make a road trip and in which I have set for the 3rd of October to do something.

I was planning on just going out in the bush in Kentucky for a few years and living off of the land. I have all the things I need to survive. I did it back when I was 22 but only for 6 months when I was in Northern NY.I was not prepared enough for the excursion and ended up almost starving myself due to a low ability of foraging correctly and hunting. I BARELY got by. I am not even sure how I lived truthfully except inner strength and the will to not give up.

Now that I am 31 I have all the wisdom I need ( to survive ) in the bush. I am / was a carpenter / concrete finisher in my line of work. But gave that up to live for happiness and not money.

I have been wanting to get out in something like your speaking of. I am 31 like I said, great shape, drug free, drink at celebrations / gatherings only, gave up smoking 3 months ago ( boy was it hard ) just look for good people to be around, work to feed myself ( gathering edibles and hunting can be work also I guess ) and so on.

I was wondering if you had a spot on your land I could pitch a tent on in a few weeks from now for about a month or so. I will work for a spotso i can pitch a tent and some food If I become to hungry. Like I said though I am fairly good at snaring , and gathering. Is there water near your land within a few miles ? That helps for sure, fish beats plants any day lol.

Anyways I will throw my facebook URL down for you if you need to see what I look like. I am handy, strong, and listen well. So let me know if anything is available weather it be a spot indoors or a spot I could pitch a tent. This will be for around the 3rd of next month. Also I can pick up some supplies if needed on the way there and not to expensive.Of course I have no car but I can hich it once inside the area. :p

Hope to hear from you soon !

Anyway, like I said--I wanted to give it one more shot. If you would be willing to talk to me, email me at rainparker@mac.com. thanks

Hey everyone, time for an update on the place... I haven't been on the pc for a while, been busy...
Well, we've been working on the big cabin doing the chinking on the walls, plumbing on the tub and getting the bathroom ready for winter, also moving the cooking area from the small cabin to the big cabin, which is now the commune area, John is building a stone oven just outside from bricks and rammed earth with clay-dirt, we're expanding the garden by the water pump for next year, also been weeding, tilling, and will be harvesting the big garden soon. I set up a workout area with a bench and weights and donated a mountain bike for anyone to use, usually going back and forth between the cabins which is about a football field long. The asian pears are almost all harvested, we made dyes from pokeweed and goldenrod, I made me a box oven for my cabin and having fun baking cake, muffins, and cookies...yummy.
The ladies spend time making their jewelry to sell at the market each week.
The table saw broke at the base one day, but I mounted it to the bench and tossed the base, I like it better now since I can now cut larger logs and took care of what's left in the pile, now we have to get busy hauling more from the field, there's plenty out there from the 40 acres that was cut for timber, but there's still plenty of woods around the cut area, so the scenery is still decent, the rising moon is awesome, I got a few good pics of it. The stars at night are amazing, with clear skies the milky way is visible across the whole sky.
Also many other odd's and end's, repairs to this and that, John got the chainsaw working and the weed whacker, him and Kevin are fixing the old pick up truck, as soon as we get the cash for a part, we'll have a farm truck to make hauling stuff easier.
And the usual chores like feeding and cleaning up the animal areas, cooking and dishes, firewood duty, etc, etc.
Right now, John is installing a double door to the big cabin on the deck he built, almost done and just need to build the stairs.
Hopefully soon, we'll get the C.O. for the cabin so we'll have hot baths(the creek is way to cold) and electricity other than the extension cords we ran from the pole.
Well that's about it for now, I'll post more later when I remember other things I missed.
John's helping respond to ya, so you can write to him as well.

    Peace all

Oooh, 40 acres of "Leavings" from the loggers sounds like a good supply of firewood. Anyone come up with a wood chipper yet? How many pounds is the biggest splitting maul over there?

For hot baths just run the creek water into an old water heater thats set inside a burn pit. :D (Similar idea for a hot tub) Better still an old steam heat radiator set in the fire pit and hooked to the feed pump to the shower / tub / spa.

Here at the 84 acre, haven't named it yet. Never been so amazed in my life. This place is a piece of heaven. I realize that all my experiences have brought me through to this. I am soooo ready. this place is nothing but POTENTIAL. I can express my art and have people who feed my imagination and artistic growth. I am now truly singingwater at my best. Love virginia anyway this is so nice. The female owner is one of the original hippies, and full of love, patience and grace. She found me in the woods while I was hiding from the world so I know this is where I am meant to be. All the dreams and possibilities I thought were pie in the sky dreams are now actually possible and I am so amazed and thrilled. This is truly a place you should at the very least visit, you will probably fall in love as I did. PLEASE PEOPLE, CONTACT US, do not take to heart some of the negatives that have been said, it is very condusive to every type of person, with every type of interest. by the way, i CUSS too, it happens, so what, no one is doggin me for it. Come over, have fun, peace out and love.

H-m-m. A “commune” owned and dictated to by a non-cussing (unwittingly Christian?) control freak, who vets the supposedly iconoclastic nonconformist applicants to make sure they conform to her autocratic criteria.

Sorry to rain on your parade, SW, but it is a dead-set recipe for a disaster! I'll bet my left-knacker it all ends up in tears....in a very short time.

had a bit of a reaction to the negative aussie geriatric delinquent...so I thought I'd respond:
Anybody who is part of any community that does not 'vet' or screen any potential members is asking to terminate the community
There are just too many slackers, negative people, and people who though they may be fine in their own rite - do not fit with your own particular working community.
As spirit suggested in a previous post - it's easy to prejudge communities - but the only way to find the truth is to visit and stay and work with each for a bit to find one that works well with each particular person.

Especially when first starting, and the core group that will carry through is not yet formed, it is imperative that each new incoming person be screened to make sure that the initiators do not find themselves out in the cold because those they let in voted them off so that they could sell they land and make off with the proceeds - it has happened.

Most ICs on rural land started off with an individual owning the land, most bend over backward to accommodate those who may be interested in joining. Those landowners who offer their land to others to work toward an IC are to be commended, not judged as autocratic because they try to put in some kind of framework to protect their long term investment in their land.
It is not wise to put the paperwork before fact when attempting to start a community.... best to let the community, when it arrives as a working entity decide on their own format.

may this afford some clarity to those who might not be aware...

    Blessings

    Namaste

    Well said oldwolf...

I felt there should be something else said about part of the comment you were responding to...

To me, this sounds a lot like the poster thinks that anyone who doesn't conform to conventional society is automatically the right type of person for any ic...

I've heard this sort of thing before... I've been told many times that I should 'sell' my plans more, or that I shouldn't be so harsh when judging people or so on and so on...

Whether I think a ic is going to work or not, is totally besides the point in terms of the advice I would give to somoene thinking about checking it out...

Go there... find out in person...

Nothing that is said online is ever going to mean a damn thing. There are numerous people who have jumped into this thread to spew how much they love this idea and how they want to go there... someday...

A lot of these same people, said the same thing to me... and to at least a few others who have made similar offers.... And they never showed up to any... They always have wonderful excuses as to why they haven't went from talking to action of course...

Seems some people obviously haven't read many of the posts in this forum before choosing to attack other people's ideas, I'll quote myself from another thread....

the people that are there, are on the land, WORKING their ideas... Whether you agree with their ideas or not, unless you are offering something similar with your own ideas, or have visited them in person, you should just leave your head up your ass where it's been all along....
