Yes, very sad indeed, but they need to see the possible reality of some places, so they can better prepare and be more aware, but hopefully not be discouraged. Perhaps do more research before visiting a place.
I've talked with some people at very nice communes, people need to remember that not all communes are right for each person, so visit, but have a way out, don't just think one way trip and get screwed.

People need to know that a commune isn't a place to hangout and live free..

a commune is a place where all the people WORK HARD to exist away from cities

its a place where those who work the hardest do have more of a say because its about basic survival / food clothing shelter

a commune isn't a place to get drugs and abuse resources and waste stuff and make messes etc etc etc

Yes lets get it straight from older people who have lived and created communes like myself back in the 70's

Yes a commune can be a great place and those who are elderly or disabled can provide their incomes to those who do most of the hard work while an elderly or disabled person can do the much needed paperwork / designs or etchings or communications etc etc

yes a commune can be great and there are many that are but there have been communes that were infiltrated by users and abusers and slouches and lazy people who have brought down the whole thing until they were removed and told to go back home and grow up ..

yes a commune is what i love because i do love people.. i also love to teach young people about many things such as gardening and developing water systems and building buildings and gravity flow firewood and why buying flat land sucks and why all weather locations actually give you more and a time to relax from the hard summers work to enjoy the harvest and sing songs and grow together and plot and plan the next yr..

    communes i love em..

I see we all have different views on what an intentional community/commune is or should be.

SW.. actually, you & i never met.

The bus is mine, is functional, registered & insured.

The van you saw was the same, except it has just returned from set of road trips totaling about 7,000 miles (the last leg having been to Colorado & back).

I owe you an apology for confusing you & lettingo.. my fault, for sure.
In fact, I think you may be confusing him with me, since he had been hanging in the RV before it pulled out, and was the one that got busted in Texas.

I never met you & don't really know what went down on the farm, so I won't comment any further, because my knowledge really isn't 1st hand.

again, my apologies for getting you mixed up. I certainly stand corrected.

oh jeesh.. ok.. i just posted that & now see the posts from above.. only one from this page loaded..

that's correct.. we never met, and yeah, what has pissed me off is people who keep kicking sam, but really just wind up here trying to do as little as possible..

i'm pretty much done with this thread, because we've gotten *ZERO* reliable people out of here, that I am aware of. I may make one last answer just to set something straight, but.. you know... why worry?

in any case, good luck & may you find where life is good for you, if it is good for earth..

I think anyone with half a brain knows that...However, I don't like the idea of no drugs!!! Fuck! Even the government lets you have some drugs like vicoden and Valium and shit!!

Plus I really don't like the idea of a "boss" either. That's the type of shit that got Charlie Manson to power...

Does Antarctica have no butterflies and rainbows ?
might be the only place on earth hey!

You don't sound very bright - even if people took the piss how long you been communal living? - you mean to say this is the first you have come across free loaders sounds like you didnt deal too well with people ....

People will only behave in a way you allow them...

    Happy learning:2thumbsup:

Maybe we worry to much about what the other person is or is not doing... Could be one of the problems with mainsteam society.

If a commune's vision is to be comatose and look at tree all day that is fine by me. If the vision is to work from sun up to sun down and gross millions a year thats fine by me too. Im just not seeing what the problem is.

Forget's got the message.. look at his pics & see what it is he's built.
that stuff doesn't happen by magic..

horse shit, mosquitoes, heavy smoke in the eyes, hard iron tools, heavy duty shoveling, horseflies, thorns, freezing you ass off in the winter because you have the balls to love your animals enough to take care of them *every* morning & *every* evening is what it's all about..

butterflies, rainbows and all the other crap that TV & artificial reality feed you are the *last* thing, not the first.

the rainbows & butterflies diet is just an indication you have no sense of reality.

you are eating junk food of the mind.

    "ooooohhhh.... pretttty....."

    give me a fucking break.

many, many, many things are *earned*, and when you earn your beauty.. when you *earn* what the earth does, then you actually become part of it, horseshit & all, & not just an observer.

*that* is what this rant is about..

    there's imagination, & there's work.

    fuck imagination.

imagination is *nothing*, unless there is work behind it.

in fact.. here's a little equation: imagination + work = hope

here's another one: work + sharing = love.

the main thing about work is that it actually equals power; not just the power to work, but it creates opportunities to give...

    you want to love animals?
    build birdhouses (work)

    you want to love people?
give them resources you have created (work) so they have something to use (*not* just suck up like lazy fucking shits with open mouths, waiting for food to drop in)

you want to love love rainbows & butterflies?

    plant flowers.. (work)

it's funny.. you know why a lot of farmers *seem* like rednecks?

because they know exactly how ass-bust hard it is..

i'm not a farmer, but i'm one of those people who does what they do with whatever strength they have, & i know how many weak minded shits there are out there who just want things easy.

    you want music?
the stuff that rips your soul away from every other aspect of your being?

learn (work) to play (work) so that that very same part of your existence can create what it is meant to be..

    yoga means work.
    gautama spoke of work
    jesus talked of work
    socrates talked of work
    krishna spoke of work..

regardless of *how* fucked up you or i or anyone in this world is, in terms of their mortal failings, the *only* thing that brings us nearer to where we are supposed to be is how well we struggle to at least not give up..

it's interesting.. even the etymology "karma" is related to "work" .. at it's root karma means "make" & "yoga" means "to join"..

    work work work..
    & then you fucking die.

    but in between?

you get little bits & pieces.. if yer lucky, maybe some big chunks of the *whole* fucking thing..

you weep at the horizon & you know the sea is just *one* more fucking breath away from becoming all you wish you were, with her...

or you know the sun is something like a sister & a friend, even if it is so fucking alien you will never understand it entirely, unless there really *is* some greater light that will burn you into her..

if *that* is what you are looking for.. the dissolution of self from experience, or whatever you fucking want to call it: " ", etc. etc.

    THEN FUCKING WORK FOR IT.

    it isn't even *hard* work.

it's just *honest* work, which for *real* shitheads is what makes it so terribly difficult.

*that* is what this farm is about.

it may never get to what it hopes to be, in terms of a place of teaching & relief..

it *is*, however, a place that folks who have no desire for a clock can find an opportunity to build on a SUBSISTENCE farm.

if you need to go to town, you either need a vehicle & what it takes to maintain it, a bicycle & the ability to ride 15 miles each way to the nearest town, or a horse of your own that you are willing to provide & care for.

hell.. maybe a hot air balloon.. i dunno, but if you need more than the very basics, you won't be happy.

we aren't so isolated that we don't make it into town at all, but typically about 2-3 times a week on a semi-scheduled basis, for those who are dependent on sam to share her vehicle.

people who have their own can come & go as they like.

if you're one of these folks bitching about the remoteness, then get wheels or something, but don't gripe after we pull your ass out of the fire & then complain about the landing zone.

it isn't the amazon, by a long shot, but if you aren't able to at least *try* to live without electricity, then this place isn't for you, because we adhere to a philosophy of preparation for *potential* catastrophe.

There is enough juice to run the well, one refrigerator and one major appliance, and that is *it*.

not for the faint of *anything*.

    anyways..

good luck to all finding wherever it is that shall hold their peace,

    jp

A post i made at another site:

    http://buckmountainexperimentalstation.org
I just wanted to make a plug for this great farm that is educating our youth. I think what they are doing is wonderful. I would love to do the same here on my farm back east. I do need helpers though. Check out the video they have. http://buckmountainexperimentalstation.org/news/

I use to live in humboldt county from 71 to 72 and then 74 to 81 and then 2004 to 2006

I started the recycling center when the container site opened in redway (after they closed the burning dump in garberville in 74) as a CETA employee and then i planted orchards in 2004 to 2006 as a caregiver to an 81 yr old woman along wallan road in garberville.

    http://www.angelfire.com/pa5/gardencapa0/my_garden/ 2004 to 2005

    http://www.angelfire.com/or2/swf4love/mygarden2006/index.album?i=10 2005 to 2006

and now i am in central Pa 55 miles north of harrisburg Pa. Here we do get rains all yr round. My only problem is finding people who want to work here and share my farm. Please see my site and get with me if your interested. If your from the buck mountain farm please get with me. I grow tons of food and can feed you and house you and supply some personal needs. Here we have mostly amish and mennonites and its really cool seeing bugies go by. I plan to get another one myself. Thanks and keep up the great work

PS: Here you can learn to drive horses to plow the fields too. My amish neighbors taught me and love help.

Wow! Did I ever say anything about abusing anything?? No...

Secondly, I am a true flower child, I was born that way. But I still like experimenting with alternative states of consciousness. In fact, I go as far as to say that I don't like being sober.

But who are you to tell me what a flower child is?? That's mad funny, someone who supports a mass murderer like Obama, telling me I'm not a flower child because I do drugs?? Obviously you're mistaking the word "flower," for the word "root," cause you got your head in the ground man!

I pity you, you are saying your place is not graced by elements of nature. You talk of 'real flower' children yet you say no to butterflies and rainbows...!!!
Any healthy place on our planet has both, sounds like it drove it all away!

I am sad to say you will never reach that harmony and willing workers because your attitude is angry and resentful.
I feel sorry for the lady who 'owns' the 'community' it sounds like she is surrounded by idiots.
I hope I never get as jaded as you, what an honour to be given this chance to create something truly wonderful it sounds to me like it will never come into fruition.

Here is to an energy shift in your heart, maybe your thinking will turn around and you show the people a place worth making the journey too..

Good luck think your gunna need it!

I do understand the need for time to play.. That is important its just that sometimes thats all some people want to do. I wish i had some who were well rounded and seeking to join me. I have had to do all the work which has left me little time for play. There will come a time when i am basically done except for basic chores and then i hope to play while another does the chores, since i created this whole thing. Yes i will always do gardening and harvesting but as for most chores that would be a younger partner.

I had hoped from the beginning that i would find an equal partner but that never happened. People didn't want to come here because i have no bathroom or indoor plumbing. I do have that set up for the future when i can build that addition. In the mean time i do all the work with paid help from local amish neighbors. :sultan:

    John forgot one thing,

Work is certainly key to accomplishment and imagination is only but a part of the overall equation.

But you know who works the hardest, who toils every moment of their day to survive?

Clueless shits. Because for the sake they dont have a clue, they will always be overwhelmed by the simple tasks in life. There will be a seemingly never-ending line of chores before them.

i.e. Feeding Animals for people there IS a problem, however what no one has mentioned is that if you take a City Kid like Hailey and expect HER to know what to feed the livestock after a brief explanaion and pointing them to where the Various types of feed are and expect them to remember (Knowing full well She WAS overly preoccupied with Rainbows & Butterflies, but hey, they're cool as fuck so who can blame them for simply "Being Green" in terms of Farm work) you have just generated MORE WORK for someone by pretty much ensuring the Job isn't done right, especially when there are frequent occasions that one or another feed types are used up and a substitution must be made, OR a different variety had to be purchaced.

NO ONE would have trouble figuring out what to feed the animals if there was simply a sign posted with a pinch or two of the various types of feed glued to it as a Visual representation, that would be the thing to do if you KNOW you have Folks on board who aren't up to speed, NOT just quickly tell them "what may or may not be in stock to feed the Animals with", point them in the general direction and then spend 20 minutes Berating them in essence for not being Born a damn Farmer when they naturally Screw up the job they've been given.
But making that SIMPLE display was said to be "too much work" when it was suggested to Sam, much like raking out the woods to add organic matter to that Clay you folks keep calling Dirt. Or, another fine way to "make work" might simply be to never turn the water main on in the Cabin, ensuring everyone will then need to Haul jugs of it around for everything right? (Yes, for those who were there just before me, the waterline to the house was in fact completed and hooked up, all someone had to do was run a Garden hose from the only water line in the Cabin with a damn valve on it to the sink or the toilet) But go ahead and think of me whenever you flush that toilet, because without this Turd having been there, you would have all been that much more in the dark and still hauling 5 gallon buckets, milk jugs and gas cans of h2o to drink or flush with,,, sorry if I reduced your work load any by Imagining that solution while I was there.

So yea, much like we came to the conclusion of in that meeting, it is a working farm not a Commune and work is and always will be your greatest produce until you really figure out how to do what the fuck you're trying to do, like sharpening a chainsaw blade, till you get the right angle, you're just wearing down your teeth.

Speaking of "Work" how many tons of Pears are going to waste this year?
Did anyone get around to picking the 1/4 acre of Paw Paws "we" found growing down by the Creek?
Has anyone as much as dropped a seed in the acre or so I prepped (with some help from Andy and Jessica) for Forest Farming right by the cabin where the water is?

    Nope, you haven't.

And YOU dont even need to reply John, because it will just be yet another case of you spewing all your regurgitated crap and platitudes from Lao Tsu about life while dodging out on the fact that in terms of honestly knowing a damn thing you are in the dark. (See: replaced every wire in your generator because you burned up a few ground lines.)
But coming from a Guy who's goal in life had been to go Prospecting for Gold when we first started talking yet chose the wide, slow shallow point in the creek as opposed to the right spot to check for flakes , it would just be wasted breath...

Now go flush that crapper, do some dishes with running water (But not HOT water, again, that bit of "Imagination" would have been too much work) in the house and think of Me because I'm the one who made that happen, all you could do was to buy the hose and couplings which I could have improvised on of course but eh', you were there leaking Money like a lotto winner.

    :cheers2:

I'd love to visit the farm. Sounds like this place has great potential. Just needs good leadership. Sound vision. Do ya'll have livestock? Sound like you need to condition the soil to grow to veggies. If not use cover crops to get nitrogen or truck in topsoil in raised beds.
Do you have an industry? A commune in Tennessee was making rope hammocks for Pier One. I bought one back in the 90's. Awesome quality built. Lasted for years till someone took it out of the yard. Cutting and selling cords of wood is also a good money maker. Many industries need wood and pay good prices and its a renewable resource.
    Good luck!

an acre of hemp can produce better building componets than wood (durability and lighter, and cheaper) since an acre of hemp = 40 or 400 acres of woods. spread the knowledge :D
