Bare in mind that he said this locking pos is a 1-2hr job. Probly won't get it done for total free anywhere. Alternatively, it sounds like it must be a pretty bad design, why not ditch it and just learn to tune?
So are you saying the only time you ever use your floyd is to divebomb before playing a solo? WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUU BLIBLBIBLIBLBILLBIBLILILBILBULBULBUBLUBL WEE WEEE I dunno. Personally I hate that shyte but like others said if you really want a floating bridge, maybe you could just learn to do it yourself. I bet there's a million youtube videos on it.
Yeah.... But he was Hendrix, he could get away with it. Nobody else is allowed... SRV came close though.
I just buy the strings and the shop does it for me. $70, that's like a beginners acoustic guitar every time.
If you really need to it, lock the system then change the strings it should be simple. I have done it a thousand times. I no longer play were I need it I am playing jazz now, its much more interesting to me.
HaHa, I used to make fun of that dive-bomb wheeduhla-wheeduhla shit too, when I couldn't do that lol :bigcry::mickey: It's foolish to dis the genre, that floating bridge was designed with a purpose, and it serves that purpose as well as or better than the competition. It was developed inspired by the demands of some of the worlds top guitar slingers of the early 80's.(example1; E.VanHalen) Now I think whammy-bars are just a whole lotta goddam fun! I loves a pinch or false-harmonic with a dive..:2thumbsup:
True. Even Blackmore used to have to replace the 'bars on his Strats in the early 70s. Forget the thing going out of tune, he used to break the whammy itself....
Don't get me wrong - big slayer fan here. All I'm saying is that that's pretty much the only use for one of those things. Yeah, floyd roses are welt built and all, and maybe if I could afford a guitar tech, I'd have a guitar with one of them - but if I have to pay 70$ or take 2 hours to change my strings, I'm out. I used to have this exact guitar. It did every shredding I needed to do (save the crazy floyd dive bombs, I guess).
One thing that hasn't been mentioned yet about Floyd Rose or other bridge setups... Besides the "whammy" effect, they all sound different. Any given guitar will sound different with a Floyd vs. a standard Strat trem vs. a hardtail, and the various variants of a Strat trem all sound different as do all the variants of a Floyd or any other type of bridge. The materials used, number and type of springs (if it's a trem) type of attachment to the body (2 screws vs 6 screws, etc)... All this shyt makes for difference in tone. This baby has an original Floyd (Version 2) with no locking nut... I hate locking nuts, they are uncalled for and sound like crap. http://www.hipforums.com/newforums/picture.php?albumid=9722&pictureid=77301
I have the lawsuit-era Kahler, it's said to have a "unique tone"... dunno...'s a'ight I guess. Seems to me the massive block of metal necessary for those beastly trems is hardly conducive to that delicious "organic" sound you get when the bridge and tail-piece is firmly connected to some decent tone-wood. Hell, in my working days I wouldn't even think about playing a guitar with a bolt-on neck, let alone a twang-ass p.o.s fender trem. Hard-tails, thru-necks, and hum-buckers is all I ever used 'till I found an 80s Jap Charvel at a pawn shop. ( sorry its the only pic I could find) The guitar was totally fucked up, I had to set up EVERYTHING from scratch...truss-rod adjustment alone took 7 fittings before I finally got it right, all the while getting that pesky trem to behave. I now consider myself an expert on these puppys lol I even had to resurface the locking nut, someone had turned the tuners with it locked and the wound strings dug deep grooves in the aluminum... (BTW TY, the ridiculous string angles on those dang hockey-stick headstocks(gag) pretty much require the locking nut) now I think I wouldn't mind a twangy 'ol strat with a modern whammy
I don't think Floyd Rose trems work any better than a Strat set up well and strung right. I'd sell the guitar and buy a Strat with a humbucker if I was looking for a shred guitar.
70$ isn't very cheap indeed. But since it is for the thing you love doing, you could say that it is agreeable. Especially when you change them rarely.
