Oh. Well then yes. I mean, my generation didn't create the cellphone, the x-box, the television, internet, blah blah blah.. The media. It's all there and it's the world that we're born into and in my opinion it's pretty fucking sad. I would love to be livin' in the '60s right now when "people cared" and everyone was "fighting for peace" etc.. Seriously. But the thing is what has it changed now? Look at the state the world is in. It just keeps getting worse.
It seems like you did. And you weren't alive in the 60's, so it's a media induced nostalgia. And things are changing today also. A quick example, look at the number of states which are allowing gay marriage now. The political mobility of the youth is the major motivator for this becoming possible.
Um... one minute. 1) The 60s generation made this POSSIBLE, pal. Not today's youth. Sure, they played a role, but with the 60s generation it is likely to have been far in the future. Give credit where it is due. I just did. 2) I DID NOT generalize. Please go back re-read what I said. Please change the filter.
YOU ARE 100% CORRECT. BUT, you don't have to buy into their game. YOU are in control of your own destiny. Damn, I sound like some wizard from a Fantasy movie...
Yes, that we know of. I'm not sure about America, but here abortion was illegal. So the figures are not going to be known. My point about aborting the baby, was that, imo, kids, faced the morality of their parents and society. We may say that the 60s was liberating...but for whom? Not many, imho. I guess it depends what part of the world you come from. I didn't say these things didn't help. But, seriously, 13-16 year olds protesting changed things? Not sure about that. I think we are living in alternate universes. America and the UK. Come over here, go to a council estate, and see who is looking after the babies. Yes. Imho, the media have portrayed young kids today in the same terms as you have. It feels like it is right, heck it might be. But, I still do think it is slightly unfair. Many kids are into sports, music (making it) and all the types of things the kids of the 60s were into. And? Beatlemania: I'm sure they wrote to their MP/Congressperson when they got home.
Libertine is absolutely correct. Young people today are media and consumer-driven and totally lacking in discipline. This is what happens when liberals are allowed to breed excessively. It's not that mommy and daddy didn't beat them enough, it's that they weren't given structure. Yes, that is an over-generalization but it is true in far too many cases. I liken the Ys to the French in the years between WWI and WWII. You're not paying attention to what's important and the Germans are going to waltz in and knock your block off in 3 days. Only it won't be the Germans, it will be your own people. Also you whine far too much.
I agree with most of this, but to deny that youth activism was much greater and more influential in the Sixties is ... well ... odd. I don't see how we will come to an agreement here, but perhaps it DOES have to do with alternate universes. HH seems to see what I see (for the most part), but we are from the same place. Anyhow. Good discussion. :cheers2:
The world was pretty shit then, too, May. http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2009/06/03/2587918.htm War in Nicaragua Vietnam etc etc As the song goes: We didn't start the fire.
Ah... Zoomie. I think the reason you, I and HH see it is because we are here. Perhaps Odon (who lives in the UK) sees quite a different scene. You and I agree 100%.
