I'm afraid I lean toward the old dog....as I posted ages ago, these tragedies lead to knee-jerk reactions that accomplish nothing, cost much, inconvenience many and mislead everyone.

Agree completely. Guns are responsible secondarily. Mental health services need to be expanded greatly and not cut back. People such as these shooters and other mentally and/or socially challenged folks need places where they can go and get themselves sorted out or at least maintain some semblance of a normal life precluding total melt down. A society is judged by how the least of it's citizens is treated --now refer to Jamgrassphan's post. Nailed it.

If someone was trained in the proper use of the samurai sword they wouldn’t want to hurt anyone with the exception of the enemy :2thumbsup:

Not to take the debate off course but the samurai weren't honourable other than to the warlord who was paying them.....

It kills me to watch these so called experts talk about every reason under the sun of why this stuff happens. Its tv, video games, movies, bad parenting, gun laws, the antisocial computer mentality, lack of mental health care.
The truth is that these kids paid the price for our freedom more than any soldier in the middle east. I am glad I have the freedom to play violent games and watch violent movies and own a gun.
its heartbraking that this happened but we shouldnt lose our freedoms because one person abused them. (thats what priveliges are for)

i read somewhere that gun control laws statistically prelude serious government oppression.... i'm hoping that the government doesn't use a tragedy like this to trick the people into voting away their second amendment, and potentially cause more tragedies.

How would Americans possibly be able to stand up to government oppression militantly? They have flying robots with missiles.

If it ever comes to that point - we've already lost. Which is why diplomacy, activism, and political participation is so important.

very good point. but still, if they take away all our means of protection, what is to stop them at all? though they could kill us instantly, if they so desired.

Imho, you have to consider who actually said it (wrote it), and why.

Your underestimating an army that would outnumber the enemy 100-1. And there are plenty of people in the private sector that could build robots and put weapons on them. And sure missles would be great but there are homeade bombs. Tim mcvie proved they can be just as dangerous.
Sure if the military wanted to just wipe out all civilians they might be able to but why would they do that? If the people refused to give up their weapons then there would be more bloodshed than there would be if they never tried to take them away in the first place.

You do realize that no-one's trying to ban all guns right?

That last sentence was so extremist that it's mind-boggling.

Okay; that was absolutely terrible wording, I apologize. I meant none of the major lobbies or the politicians.

I just can't see why people need automatics to protect themselves. I haven't heard of an automatic weapon being used for protection. And anymore it's rare to hear about a shooting that doesn't involve at least semi-auto.

guns are cool, i think. i think knives are neat too, and i think people should take proper safety precautions and use a level head with both.

Sorry for oldquoting, but I've been reading through this thread and wanted to comment on a few things people have said...

I know a lot of people who work in journalism/reporting/news and nobody had a good time reporting this. Maybe for the people up at the top (in levels of corporate power where pscopathy & general lack of empathy are more highly prevalent) -- but for the people reporting the news, it's not a fun thing to have to talk about or think about, especially when your job entails talking about all the horrible shit that goes on every day in a world that is going to hell. Reporters have emotions too.

mexican guns come from America. They are produced by American companies and sold in massive free open gun fairs in bulk and then reintroduced illegally. The problem stems from America, though. Mexicans are just taking advantage of a good business opportunity created by the US
