Coronavirus cases surging, has ‘potential’ to be global pandemic

The deadly new coronavirus continued its spread beyond China with cases surging rapidly Monday in Italy, Iran and South Korea.

The number of people sickened by the disease has now topped 79,000 globally, officials said.

“The past few weeks has demonstrated just how quickly a new virus can spread around the world and cause widespread fear and disruption,”
said the head of the UN’s World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

“Does this virus have pandemic potential? Absolutely, yes,” Tedros said.
