If this topic interests you, I suggest that you read Carl Johan Calleman's breakthrough book, The Mayan Calendar And The Transformation Of Consciousness. Your local library probably has a copy if you don't want to spring for the paperback. You can also check out Calleman's website, which has lots of very interesting info: http://www.calleman.com/
I dont know much about their calender but i do know a few things about them. they where phenomenal astrologers, they predicted ecplipses where and what time they would appear on the earth thousands of years in advance, with only a few seconds off. now i believe where they get 2012 from is this. earth will lose its magnatism and the polarities will switch places, north becomming south and south becomming north. i herd this from a couple of sources, one of which was discovery cosmos, you may have herd of it. but, they say that the earth is on a 26,000 year cycle which may be comming to an end in 2012, now this was on discovery cosmos that science channel so im not just shooting stuff out of my ass. but i have head it at other sources aswell. i am not saying iits 100% true, but there is some evidence twords it. not saying it has anyhting to do with religion, but some major changes would take place. I mean come on poles changing places... those scientist said that the earth would stop rotation for 3 days and return in the opposite direction. every planet is on a cycle so im sure you have herd. even the sun, it is on a 11 year cylce from what this show said. but what i am saying is this, the mayans couldnt have had it all wrong. maybe some shit will go down in 2012...
I basically see the Mayan prophetic calendar as a schedule for our collective spiritual evolution. 2012=graduation? More and more, people are beginning to realize that all consciousness is connected and through its connection and self-interaction, reality is manifest. WE ARE GOD
This is impossible--the force of gravity (which keeps the earth spinning) would have to completely stop and then start again. What would prompt this? Even if it did happen, life on earth would cease completely. Every man, woman, child, dog, cockroach, tree, and elephant would go flying off into space, our atmosphere would vaporize, and the earth would cease being spherical (sp?), and thus wouldn't even be a planet anymore but essentially a popped zit oozing out into the universe. I don't doubt that planets and stars are on cycles, but this does not mean that they demonstrate an end in that cycle by ceasing to rotate. If the earth supposedly stops spinning every 26,000 years, why is there no evidence of it happening 26,000 years ago? And btw, if your wondering where I'm getting all this information, my father is an astrophysicist (oh, and I believe you meant that the myans were great astroNOMERS, not astroLOGERS) -Kate
I agree with you about the Earth stopping its rotation. However... I'm not getting all froo-froo here, but many modern people immediately dismiss ancient science as superstition. I recommend that you pick up "Ancient Astrology" by Tamsyn Barton. This is actually part of a series on the history of science and very good. Anyway science as we know it is purely a modern invention. What makes modern science distinctive is the method. This is not to say that ancient "science" is inherently superstitious either. Sometimes it was. But, many other times they were almost on track of not entirely. Yes the logic was different, and yes they didn't usually use the exact same method of testing and repeatablity. Remember that the word "science" is from the Latin "sciencia" meaning "knowledge". In the ancient world, ALL pursuits of knowledge were called science. This means philosophy was a science, astrology, alchemy, the study of plants and animals, and history. Ancient science was based on observation and was anecdotal as opposed to our system. This does not mean they were always wrong or superstitious. Before the 17th or 18th century, astrology was called astronomy. Good asrologers were actually pretty knowledgeable. Gallileo did not invent the idea of a solar-centric universe. In the classical period there was a general movement towards more critical thinking, and Christianity destroyed it, so we went backwards. Gallileo heard about his theory from Classical texts. The Greeks (actually a Greek-Egyptian) figured out pretty closely the actual size of the Earth. They also knew the Earth was round. The Mayans definitely used astrology, BUT they also were masterful astronomers that would not be seen in the west (at least by Europeans) for a while. People tend to criticize the logic more than the results. If an ancient person believed that a planet had divine attributes, BUT at the same time figured out the correct orbit, then is he inherently wrong?
are we? i think we are on the cusp of deciding whether to grow up as a species or commit collective suicide. but i don't think 2012, or any other arbitrary number has a whole lot do do with it. the real bottem line of humanities future is whether, by continuing to use combustion to generate energy and propell transportation we screw our species into an early extinction, or by adopting proven, reliable, already existing noncombustive tecnologies to provide as much as we really need of this things, avert thus collectively screwing ourselvs. (solar has been proven for decades, hydro for centuries, and wind for millinea) doesn't have much to do with gods or beliefs or idiologies, or even predictions, other then the incentives being created to do just exactly the opposite from what we need to in order to save ourselves. =^^= .../\...
Enlil--I didn't mean to convey that the Mayans knew nothing. I'm well aware of their amazing contributions to modern astronomy/astrology (wasn't aware about the name change, thanks for the info). I just felt that the other poster was inserting alot of seprate claims and conjoining them with the Mayans, which is what I raised question with.
nothing weird is gonna happen in 2012. throughout history people have been waiting for physical signs to vindicate their spiritual convictions and that means they haven't really got a clue about it. Connection to the universal consciousness, which is the ultimate reality, transcends time and space (the physical universe) which is illusion. The nature of our true being is infinite and eternal. We are not approaching global awareness. For every hippy who thinks he's sussed it out, there are 1000 other people born into ignorance who will never even give the big questions a second thought. Don't wait til 2012. The truth is all around us right now. Transformation can happen anytime. It's a matter of perception. - sorry, that's just my take on it.
i think it's realy crippy !! but it's not right 4 sure ..i beleive that the end of the world is near but i mean by that 500-1000 years ..there're many clues beside the Mayans that says the end of the world is very close ..but every1 of them have a diffrent date ..so which 1 we have 2 believe !!!?
pretty interesting there...but who knows what will happen and when our human race will begin again....noone knows. noone is meant to know. we are meant to live our lives and enjoy ourselves to the best of our ability. take care everyone. it does not matter whether the end is near or not if you have had a fufilling life thus far. and if 2012 is when it should end for us, i embrace it and hope the future men take better care of our Mother Earth than we did.
the end of the ages in the mayan calender occurs when the sun crosses the center axis of the milky way galaxy every however many years, if this wasnt gonna happend on 12/12/12 the theory would be have been long debunked. As far as i know tho, it doesnt mean the end of the world, just the end of an age, and teh end of the mayan calendar. In any case, guess well just have to wait and see.
