I would also choose openoffice it is possible to convert files to and from pdf....

Mencoder and transcode are usefull apps.... They are both in the ubuntu universe you could also compile from source, also have the multimedia...
I would say linux for the desktops and freebsd/openbsd for servers many companies are going to switch to redhat, or suse in the near future...
