getting out of Athens..was a hassle..not easy..
I stood about 1 hour..but luck came my side..
a German in a VW bus stopped..nice dude+girl friend..
going towards Yougoslavia..they gave me a ride..
up to the crossing where the road splits towards Saloniki..
this time..I went to the railway station..and slept overnight
for free in the railway station waiting room..it was summer..
and full of backpackers..usually going down to Athens..
or the Greek islands..nobody going towards the Turkey side..
in my opinion the railway in saloniki was very lenient..
towards backpackers sleeping in the station...normally..
it's not allowed..I did it once in Mo i Rana(Norway)
next morning...well...honestly..to tell you all..
I did not sleep very well..I had a breakfast in the station..
and moved my ass..towards the Kavalla road...
now..hitch hiking in Greece...well..terrible it was..
the Greeks did not trust foreign hippie types asking for rides..
sometimes..with bit of luck..and if there was place..
some tourists gave a ride..but very seldom a Greek..
I got my ride..but only very short ride...funny thing happened..
believe it or not..I stood in a remote spot...middle of nowhere..
probably in between 2 villages??a peasant came along..
in a donkey cart...guess what...he stopped..and offered me..
a ride..I remember that one..it was the slowest I ever had..
he did only speak Greek..and dropped me 2kms.further on..
then..my luck turned..a French couple stopped..and offered
me a ride..first they were making a deal about sharing benzine..
but when they heard..I was going to India..they said..O.K.
you got a long way ahead of you..they gave me a free ride..
and we drove all the way over Kavalla...towards Xanthi..
oh my God..I remembered that accident..but I did not tell..
this couple..they stayed overnight at a campsite..
they slept in a tent...and I slept in their car..
next morning..I said goodbye..
because they did not go to Turkey..nice people..
will tell you about crossing into Turkey via Ipsala..
