What are the house rules? What's the layout like? What's behind the bar? What'll get you kicked out? Whats on the jukebox? GO.
I'd run an art pub, an alternative to the sports bars. There'd be no TV's so people actually talked to each other We'd be flipping Records always, and every week there'd be a special "Bring your own (enter genre/time period here) record" It'd be a place for artists/musicians and the like to connect and share some of their works. There'd definitly be a stage for live performances. Jocks would get kicked out
I follow you on the stage, open mic, live music and stand-up is a must, as is a good film club. I've been to a few fetish nights and have always found the patrons to be absolutely lovely, so I might have a dungeon for those scallywags to enjoy themselves. I love the record swap idea. I'd like to have a section of the venue available for people to scribble on, i like the idea of a bar that people literally "leave their mark on." I'd have a resident storyteller. Old irish or scottish guy, permanently on hand, spinning yarns for a drink.
I went to a show once where stand up comedians entertained the audience in between bands. Most shows I go to involve the entire room emptying out in between bands so everyone can go smoke a cigarette. I thought doing a part comedy show/part music show made the evening more cohesive. I wouldn't mind doing something like that. And maybe designate one night a week for poetry or open mike. Maybe a night of karaoke but using a full band instead of a karaoke machine. the bar's focus would definitely be geared towards supporting local musicians and the local art community as a whole. I would always have local beers on tap, local music, maybe a section to display the work of local artists on the wall.
I'd like to be a sleeping partner in a pub venture.I would like to have influence over the style and ambience and pop in and hang out,but leave the logistics and running of the joint to someone who knows has experience.I suppose I'd go first the usual alternative bar stuff.Book and record swaps, customers allowed to bring in their own cds to play.Small stage for open mike nights and new local bands.Wall space for artists to show their work.Candles and incense welcome.Poetry nights and maybe discussion groups.A screen for showing films.Notice board for regulars to advertise whatever they want.Good vegetarian food.A couple of old-school arcade machines. An all in jest speed dating night every two weeks just for fun.Board games and card decks.Dogs welcome. You get the general idea.
First, it's got to have a good name, something different but catchy. I'll firstly call my new pub the; Sunken Norwegian. The layout would be simple. It would be underground, or at the very least a basement style live music venue. At least 6 pool tables are layed out in one corner, nice room between them to encourage pool tournaments and general play. To the left of this, kind of central of the room would be a table set up where people can sit down and talk to their friends. Traditional pub style resteraunt and meals. Schnitty, burger, fries etc. no Jamie Oliver dishes at the Sunken Norwegian, just good ol' hearty meals for the customers. The main stage of course would be central and at the opposite end of the bistro area. It isn't a massive stage, big enough for a 5 piece band and a bit of head banging. Stainless steel mesh is encased around the stage as a barrier with speakers decked out either side, in front and positioned to bounce the noise around the pub. Wooden floors for the pit area, carpeted standing areas surrounding. The bar is a flat style, straight. We serve a mixture of beer here on tap, mostly German, then overseas boutique stuff. Maybe you'll even find a Guiness.. but maybe not. On the wall behind the bar are your spirit selections. A vast variety from wodka to runs, bourbon, whiskey, liqueurs etc. and a few nice wines for the ladies. During the week we have a pool tournament and cheap eating nights while Thurs-Sunday are more so for live entertainment. We play rock and metal here, occasionally underground artists perform but our customer base is basically metal heads and seedy people. What will get you kicked out? Being a general dick. Rude to the staff and starting fights. No tolerance on vandalism. We don't need security here because our regular customers are mainly big mean Vikings who are ready to pulverize any miscreant laying no respect for the pub. Our outdoor area is a beautiful set up. We have several big screens for sporting views and our jukeboxes hook up to them so you can watch film clips and live events. Old oak trees hover over the area creating a darkish euphoria, it gets cold in winter from the shade and a big open fire burns during winter. Also heat lamps etc scattered on outer areas. Pig on the spit every Saturday and Sunday for lunches cooked over the pit. Lastly to go with the name, the decor is mainly old viking stuff, maybe even the entrance can be like a Long Boat or the Dragon Head. We encourage our patrons to decorate areas with rune work and markings. My staff are all alternatively dressed. The girls wear fishnets and leather, to suit the theme of metal. They are good eye candy and the boys too, suppose their eye candy for the girls. With their long hair and tall, strong. We are also open to burlesque performances
I would only sell craft beers. Televisions would be minimal, and they would be showing extreme sports. Live music featuring alt country, bluegrass, and punk bands. Ladies might would be every night. Jocks not allowed.
You're being a real fucking jerk today, aren't you? Did someone get their little scrubs in a twist? Or are you just a troll?
How do we make money? It's a pub. It can be the shittest dive in the world. People still gone drink motherfucker.
ugh, that's a business i would hate to get into. although i suppose it can be profitable if done well. am i opening it around here? if so, there's only one business model that works, which is basically that anything goes. based on what is currently successful in this town, i would have to ignore the anti-smoking laws, allow open drug use, serve people who are already so drunk they can't get to the bathroom, and allow people to break EVERYTHING. any sort of music seems to be accepted as long as it is loud enough to give the neighbors hearing loss. of course, i would ideally open it anywhere else. so in that case, my priority would be good bar food. really, that's the only reason i ever actually want to go to the bar, because bar food is so damn good. so that's priority one, and beyond that, i would just try to do everything the opposite of the bar i described above.
well it isn't a bar. its an organic restaurant and grocery. or a model train, radio control, and computer hobby shop. premeditatedly harmful or inconsiderate behavior will likely get one asked to leave. parents are urged to keep their children on a leash and in their sight at all times. there would be plenty of things to enjoy (non-destructively) for free, and quite a few relatively inexpensive. or it could be a large piece of land. with lots of really tiny houses. and people welcome to build more of them. little trains instead of roads to drive around on it. one large inclosed lockable structure near the entrance to park, or preferably outside transit access as well. there may be some exotic but mostly harmless creatures being bred for their species survival program there too. the restaurant features made on site soups and breads and fair trade organic coffees and cocoa. the grocery locally grown organic produce. both may be something of a coop. may be something of a daoist sangha or nalanuthu library with anechoic study and meditation rooms. maybe the whole thing is like what ananada was built to be. but i'm afraid i'm not much of a one for managing people. i just know what i find interesting and like. gardens and forests and funky irregular random mazes of places and space. maybe that's what the place would be. just some kind of public tea and pleasure garden and arboretum. with lots of mazes of trails to get lost in. and picnic tables and restrooms and bar-b-que pits. i'd still want little trains there. and maybe little houses. a kind of wonderland of a meditation retreat. i'd rather do something like that, then try to run any kind of a business really. just some place quiet and peaceful, for quiet and peaceful people to enjoy.
Bloody Hell It's Supposed To Be A Pub Not A Social Experiment......Whats A Guy Got To Do Around Here To Get A Glass Of Champagne...... .?????? Cheers Glen.
When I think of running a bar I just think of all the cool music I'm gonna play haha. Lots of psych rock and roots reggae, preferably one of the bars were you could smoke pot (in a smoking area, as this is obligatory here... ). I have no specific thoughts about drinks and performances, although there would be the regular kind of drinks someone would expect, and an opportunity for jamming would be fun, like once a week or something. I would definitely not get into a format where you need to pay performers to play at your venue. An official jam evening for everyone who feel up for joining a jam session. People can take turns so we would get different line ups. An informal atmosphere. And as long as I can pay the bills it's alright.
build a small scale distillery? grow a few herbs? i'm just not the person with the patience with people to manage or even be employed in something like that. everyone is welcome to their own of course. a tea garden with picnic tables might grow more then one kind of "tea". a sake stand in one corner of the gardens too maybe? there could be an acoustically semi isolated area deep among the trees with a band stand for live performances and open mike.
I See Nothing In Your Bloody Post That Addresses My Problem...... I Don't Want Your Bloody Herbs...... I Don't Want Your Bloody Tea...... I Don't Want Your Bloody Sake...... All I Want Is One Of Your Bloody Picnic Tables...... And A BLOODY GLASS OF CHAMPAGNE...... Surely This Is Not Asking Too Bloody Much...... Cheers Glen.
If it was in a larger city, I'd love a rooftop or top floor location in a tall building, with large windows on three sides. Otherwise, my second choice would be a basement with an outside entrance; a stairway leading up to sidewalk level. The interior would be colorful, but not too bright, with a variety of interesting items hanging on the wall, including historical collector's items, old signs, photography, and abstract art. We would play mostly classic rock CD's, with a small stage used only for the very highest quality cover bands. Maybe one night each week, jazz and/or blues. I would charge only a small premium for top shelf liquor, with a long drink menu featuring old classic mixed drinks that so many young people have never tried. I want to keep the classics alive. The bouncer's only instructions would be to remove anyone who is bothering other people.
