Sad fact, but true. If you're not at least 45 years of age, you have no right to the title. You imitate. Hippies were original to the times that created them. They were born as a response to something that had gone horribly wrong in society. Many of you endorse the manner of dress, the lingo, the drug use. But you know what I see that's missing? The drive. The "in your face" why are you doing this attitude. The challenge to authority. Modern hippies are cowards. And the government likes you that way. There. I said it. Flame away...cowards. x
If you say we can't be hippies because we 'imitate', then like 99% of hippies weren't hippies either. There were a few original hippies, then the whole movement set in, which was followed by hippies that imitated them and their way of life, but then since they were imitating someone else they weren't really hippies. Is what I am getting from this, however I could be misinterpreting you?
No I am not a real hippie. Nor do I pretend to be. Nor do I want to be. Does this post have a point or are you just stupid?
I thought the hippie movement was a new and radical lifestyle...? I didn't know lifestyles were confined to people only from a certain time period...?
your post makes no sense. if someone calls himself a hippie and follows hippie ideals, he is a hippie. there was something to "fight against" then, and there is something to fight against now. half the old school hippies were people who sat at home and smoked weed, just like now. half the modern hippies are people who get out and fight for what they believe in - freedom, education, etc. nevertheless, i personally do not consider myself a hippie, though some people may consider me one. i hate to label myself or anyone else - i think it is restricting.
Xexon, what do you do to challenge authority? Where's your "in-your-face" drive? Sitting behind a computer posting on a forum does not cut it. So, xexon, flame away.
i've had this coversation with someone before, and in a sence no, young people aren't "hippies" however right now we do have quite a few simalarites between that era and now, becasue there is a war going on, our forumer president was corrupt and deceitfull, our rights were being violated, people were dieing, activism was and still is high for various things. so the young people of today may not be "hippies" of the 60-70 era, but they could be known as the new wavers, new thinkers of tomorrow... and don't think "Hippies" of the now aren't just as loud obnixious, drugged out, free thinkers and willing speakers just as they were 20-30 years ago.
i do not actively emulate hippies. i am very much different than "real" hippies. i do not call myself a hippy, nor do i often get called a hippy by others. most of the most notable "hippies" of history i severely dislike in one aspect or another, from ken kesey to john lennon. i agree that there are no more legitimate hippies, except for the people who "lived it," and remain relatively unchanged. most "hippies" i meet i dislike. i think i am like many, if not most, of the regulars in RT. i do not call myself a hippie, nor do i care to be. i do not emulate or strive to achieve "hippiedom." there are certain things that i like about the hippie movement, but that movement is dead and people who try to revive it or think they maintain it are, imo, kind of on the sheepish and unintelligent side. i love hippies who wear 20 dollar factory made tshirts with 30 dollar patchwork cordoroy pants, 60 dollar birkenstocks and sunglasses specially made to look like "hippy" sunglasses, wear bandana headbands, and so on. and especially people who pour tons of money into maintaining a gas-guzzling VW microbus just for good measure. imo "hippies" these days are generally fucking weak. many, if not most, of the regulars in RT at least partially agree with me. basically: fear not of ruffling feathers by implying that we aren't hip enough.
