I read some really life changing books this year and it's really too difficult for me to choose just 1 as my top read. So my top 3 are - 1. 'Eating Animals' by Jonathan Safran Foer. I became a vegetarian after reading about the true horrors of factory farming in this book. 2. 'Hungry Ghosts' by Jasper Becker. Tells the truth about the level of famine and starvation of Chinese people during Mao's Great Leap Forward. Not only was it enlightening, but the detail in went into of how starvation can affect people and what it can make them do really broke my heart. From the moment I finished this book I have never taken my privelige of living in Western society for granted. 3. 'Crime and Punishment' by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. A classic novel about a destitute Russian ex student who goes out and murders an old, ruthless money lender believing his is serving some higher purpose by doing so.
Good books. I'll have to come back to this but I don't think I read anything life-changing in 2013, then again that year blurred with 2012, so let me think about it again.
I just can't abide suffering of the vulnerable. In particular - animals, children, women, the elderly and the poor.
