I've noticed that there's never been a thread/post on this site about palm oil. I know a lot of people might be quick to say that palm oil has been well reported about in media, but there are many people who haven't heard of it... at least not in the context of deforestation.

I won't say that's it's in everything, but it's basically in a lot of junk food, as well as other things that we buy on a daily basis. These include makeup, pizza, chocolate, ice-cream, washing up liquid, soap, toothpaste, shower gels, and shaving foam. Basically the more you treat your body like s***, the more you are responsible for burning down the rain forest, as well as human trafficking. Other substitute oils include rapeseed oil, sunflower oil, and coconut oil, but these require roughly 7 times the acreage to yield the same amount, making making palm oil ridiculously cheap.

The below article shows a 15 year study that has been conducted which has proven that the so called ethically produced sustainable palm oil has actually cleared more acres of rain forest than than the non-certified kind. Also, any time palm oil is purchased it's next to impossible to trace where it's come from due to the complex supply chains, making it very difficult for companies to know whether they may be responsible for trafficking

Certified sustainable palm oil may kill more wildlife, say scientists

It is quite disgusting to see on the WWF website (below) that they give the following advice as a solution:

"The best thing we can do is support sustainable palm oil and avoid boycotts, since we know substitutions with other vegetable oils can lead to even further environmental and social harm"

8 things to know about palm oil

That advice makes no sense. The best advice in order to stop this issue is to simply stop consuming like crazy, buying stupid stuff that we don't need.

You can think of it as if there's three kinds of people; those that don't care about the impact of palm oil on the planet, those that that have a rationalisation for their habits, and those that are ignorant of the issue. It's actually probably a lot easier for men to cut the us the use of palm oil of their lives than women, because of all the makeup, shampoos, etc, that they use. It's hard for me to watch my siblings raise their kids by treating them to the norms of society, by buying things like ice cream, but I stay silent.

Here is a powerful ad on the issue below:

I don't like to see orang-utans lose their homes. All forms of agriculture have an environmental impact. Maybe the problem is over population. Borneo and Sumatra cold get an eco tourism industry going where rich westerners could pay to see orang-utuns in the wild.
Is pizza a junk food? It would only contain a smidge of oil. Margarine would be far more unhealthy. Also I thought palm is used in margarine production.
Chocolate. I buy Darrell Lea because Cadbury's is far too sweet. Anyway, they claim to be palm oil free.
Ice cream. Only factory ice cream would contain palm oil. Traditionally palm oil is not an ingredient.
Toothpaste. I use bi-carb of soda.
Shaving foam. I use an electric razor.
BTW I can move this thread to the Environment forum where it won't get buried.

Okay, move the thread there so please.

I don't know much about the ingredients of pizza, but surely it's a junk food.

I don't think it's over population. The problem is never solely one thing. In America 40% of all food is thrown out. There should be more awareness. If everyone conserved their food and electricity as good as myself, then maybe we could afford to have double the population in the United States. But there would never be an awareness campaign on wastefulness because it's not good for business.

Is this figure on farm, off farm or a combined figure?
