    thanks for the reply, man.

my wife's parents have driven nothing but hondas for years. that's where this CR-V came from.
it has a small leak in the head gasket. the guy at my mechanic said that's kinda common on hondas once they reach a certain age.

we are actually planning on having a kid in like...less than 8 months. so that's very relevant.

mazda rust sounds super shitty, since the salt on the roads here turns everything to rust. my mechanic said he could push a pen through the frame of my taurus when i got rid of it. i believe that for sure...it was bad.

the subaru outback doesn't look any higher off the ground than most cars. i guess an inch isn't very noticeable, but they don't have that SUV "look" (not that the look is important to me)

so if you had the choice between FWD, RWD, AWD or 4WD...which one do you get?

    Pretty much.

If you wanna RWD vehicle nowadays you could buy any pickup truck, high performance sports car, or a v8 powered police cruiser like a Charger or a Crown Vic.

Yeap.. Crown Vc was the last RWD sedan I beliee. At least in North America. Stoped making those tanks 4 years ago. The world will never see a better sedan. Well.. Not considering gas mileage.. Lol

i don't even know how to figure out if this CR-V is front wheel drive or not. i'm guessing it is, but i can't find it in the owner's manual. how do i tell without getting stuck in the snow and seeing which tires spin? :)

Look under the car at the back axle. If there's a differential its RWD, otherwise its powered by the front wheels.

Are you in a state with significant snow fall? If so, I'd go AWD.

I don't think RWD is an option. FWD is not bad. Standard. 4WD.. I used to driv large trucks and tractors for a living.. Our work trucks were all 4WD... Those pieces of shit got stuck in conditions my Tercel could get through. Seriously. I don't buy into 4WD. I used to drie my dad's old 94' Explorer 4X4. Was nothing special. Then it got stuck in 4X4 and the tranny went.

AWD CRV is a great vehicle. The awd will get you through the snow, the height clearance is perfect for loading kids into the backseat (not bending over like with a Subaru, though great cars), the field of vision is excellent, proven safety and reliability record. I could go on. Just be adamant with the rust proofing. My Tercel is 15 years old and was rustproofed every single year, and it shows. She looks great underneath.

My lady and I are planning on having kids within the next two years and we've settled o a Rav4 or CRV. Can't go wrong, in my opinion.

AWD decreases fuel economy a slight bit. Aside from that, I wouldn't worry about it.

It takes more energy to push than it does to pull.. That's why the switch to FWD. It's not as hard on the vehicle.

AWD will still have a rear differential?

i agree about 4WD...they suck unless they are IN 4WD. in 2 wheel they slide all over the fuckin' place.

my own first car was when i was in the air force. it was around the time i turned 21. bought through the federal employees credit union, that had a branch on base.

it was a 59 chevy panel cargo wagon. like a pickup only enclosed in back. not long enough to streatch out in back completely. but otherwise pretty much what i wanted at the time. i don't remember what came of it. i think it got towed one day what i was broke and i just left it in the impound to rot. because i was no longer in and i was on my way to another state. and i had already made up my mind i would rather abondon things then hassle over trying to keep them.

i've never been big on vehicles, but i've always loved places where you need one that are too far to walk.

My first car was a rusty, sea foam green Dodge Shadow.

My friends and I had many near death experiences in that piece of shit.

    I miss that car.

I think your American first cars are a lot cooler than our usual shitty British ones (perhaps not as ecological though...)!

Classic American cars are infinitely cooler than Euro cars. Just my opinion.

Nothing better than the look, smell, and feel of a classic American muscle car.
