    I just made reservations!

I'll be flying into Amsterdam October 15th and will be travelling until I fly back to DUBYA-LAND (*shudders*) November 8th.

I'm missing the oppurtunity to vote, but I honestly don't care for either candidate (I know, i know, not a good attitude - lesser of the 2 evils and all that). I'm already so burnt out on American politics. I would definitely rather travel.

PM me if you might be interested in meeting up for a drink or something while I'm in Europe. If I am near you while I travel, I can e-mail you and let you know.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

    Peace

according to what I did visit, I suggest you Barcellona and anywhere in Spain, Cote Azur (don't waste time going to Montecarlo is awfully packed with buildings all over the coastline and inland), Paris (the most beautiful city of the world), Cinque Terre, Alghero (Sardinia), Roma, Sicily, pretty much anywhere in Greece too, Budapest (my scond best favourite), Stockholm and swedish countryside, Dolomites(italy) and Swizterland for Alps, Amsterdam is crazy, then even though I've never been there yet, I strongly recomend you Baleares, Berlin, Balaton lake in Hungary, Prague and Cracow..well good luck man..

Borut16, no offence, but Romania is situated in the South Eastern Europe. It's a transition country between Central Europe and the Balkans, having similarities with both. When you say Eastern Europe you mean Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. Georgia and Armenia are in the Caucasus, which is culturaly and geographically a particular area (a very original and interesting one, actualy).

And about beautiful places in Europe, you all should think at the following: the mountains of Romania, the Danube Delta, the monasteries of Bucovina, which are unique in the world, the Dacian cities of the Orastiei Mountains, Transylvania, just to quote some of my favourite places.

Sandu, I think this has very much to do with where you are situated. Up here in Sweden, people (wrongly) tend to call anything that used to have some amount of socialism in it "Eastern Europe", which is of course ridicilous from a geographical perspective. Borut referred to Romania as being in Eastern Europe while being in Slovenia himself. Romania is right to the East of Slovenia, hence it is in Eastern Europe from his perspective. To me, anything below Austria is Southern Europe (while it can also be Central...), and anything to the East of Poland and West of the Ural mountains is Eastern Europe. There aren't exactly any given, constant definitions. For instance, is Slovenia in the Balkans? Geographically no, but most people think it is, because the rest of the old Yugoslavia is. It all comes down to culture and politics; who you identify with and who others identify you with. What is Western Europe for instance? I think most people think of the European Union (which makes the enlargement even more interesting as to how these terms will develop) or the Liberal Democratic "rich" nations, including Scandinavia. But we in Scandinavia call ourselves the Nordic, so what are we? I'm afraid this will always be up to the subjective view of the individual observer, no matter how we feel about it.

    peace,
    -Pat

I think it might be time for an update, as it's been about 4 months since I went on my trip! :)

I ended up flying into Amsterdam. Stayed their a few days and chilled - got over jetlag, explored the city again (2nd time there), met some people. I ended playing cards with some girls from France .. I told then I was going to stop through Paris in my travels, and one of them invited me to stay with her .. very cool. After 3 days in the 'Dam I took a train to London; only stayed their 1 day as I didn't feel like being in a big city (I should go back sometime). Went to Edinburgh from London. I loved Edinburgh .. wish I had more time there as well as the rest of Scotlad. From there to Glasgow for a night. Then on to Dublin via train and ferry to Belfast and train to Dublin. 1 night in Dublin.

I wasn't planning on this, but the majority of my trip was spent in Ireland. I loved it! From Dublin I went to Killarney, where I spent 3 days. It was very touristy, but the surrrounding landscape is fucking beautiful - rented a bike, walked to the castle, etc. Then I went to Doolin - spent 2 nights - got drunk and saw some great prog-trad which is an oxymoron - fiddle, Bodhran, didgeridoo ;) etc. 3 nights in Galway with more drinking and music - met some great people, and travelled with one or 2 for a few days. From Ireland I took a budget flight to Paris - 2 nights. From there to Barcelona 2 - nights. Overnight train back to Asterdam where I spent my last night.

So it really wasn't much time in each place. I'm getting over being sick, so I don't feel like writing much more. if you have any questions about a specific place just let me know. I would love to go back and visit Eastern European countries, and of course Italy, and further explore Scotland. And then of course their's the scandinavian countries! Oh well ... I'm becoming quickly addicted to travelling, so I'll probably be back ..... Muahahahaha!

Four months ago...meaning November or around that time, right? I made a quite similar trip around Ireland in November 1997, and I must agree that Killarney is incredibly beautiful that time of year, just when the green is turning orange on the hills. They say it always rains then, but I saw almost no rain at all during those three weeks. Only when in Galway, which prevented me from going to the Aran Islands... Did you happen to go there during your stay?

    peace,
    -Pat

Shadowplay, I agree with you. I wasn't expressing some hard feelings toward Borut, I was just giving him and the others some information, that's all, because is a known fact that many of us don't know much about the world outside our countries. And he himself was "correcting" someone else who said would love to travel through Eastern Europe. Please read his post, and you'll see why I need it to say something about. He was puting Romania in Eastern Europe with Russia, and Bulgaria, which is exactly South of Romania, in South Eastern Europe.

And I think when we define a region, we should take count both of geography and culture. So, Romania is to the same longitude as Finland. Is Finland Eastern Europe? Through culture, Romania is a part of the Byzantine heritage area, like Greece, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Serbia and Montenegro, and geographically is exactly North of Bulgaria. So, even if only the Dobrudza province is a part of the Balkans, Romania is part of South Eastern Europe. On the other hand, being close to Central Europe, having an important German minority the last 800 years, who influenced the population of the areas they lived, Romania has much more in common with the Central European countries, then it has with Russia. Geographically, Romania is South East of Poland, but much of their teritories are directly South-North situated. So, again we cann't place this country in Eastern Europe. Of course, Romania has much more in common with Russia or Ukraine then it has let's say Austria. But not enough to be considered Eastern European from that perspective.
