beans and TVP. pasta shells, stuffed with TVP and homemade tomato sauce, with sliced olives and green peppers... yummers
Boca makes an excellent ground beef substitute. (TVP) I use it in tacos, sloppy joes, spaghetti sauce, etc. Just because I'm a vegetarian doesn't mean I have to give up such things. A word about protein. In the west, we are encouraged to eat alot of it. This is a big mistake as it leads to health problems later in life. Why make money for the drug companies who sell the treatment for these maladies? In the east, they eat far less protein and enjoy good health well into their old age. I love beans personally. I was raised in Alabama, and it was a major part of the diet there. But I don't eat them for the sake of protein. x
^^ Exactly! Esp. since I went vegan I've gotten so many questions about "where do you get your protein?" - "How do you know you're getting enough...?" etc. To be honest, I've stopped even taking vitamin supplements lately. And I feel great! I don't go crazy measuring every nutrient. But I can generally name the whole, non-chemmy ingredients in everything I eat. I don't go crazy to be sure I have "enough protein". I just live my life, and throughout the day and week I remember what I've eaten lately, and have something completely different for my next meal. As long as you're eating a VARIED, HEALTHY diet you feel wonderful and every little bit of every food/nutrient doesn't need to be counted. I do enjoy beans, and whole grains. Brown rice and occasionally (exceedingly rarely, in fact) whole wheat pasta. Tofu, in an occasional scramble or stir-fry. Ian still really digs his veg. burgers, but I don't like them so much anymore... (even the vegan ones). He also still eats those corn dogs, and agrees that they are addictive! I have learned to enjoy vegan lunch meat "chicken" slices to a point. I got a bunch a couple of weeks ago, clearance at the grocer. They make a good sandwich with onion, tomato, and fake cream cheese. It's yummy, but not something I can eat often!
Subsititute for the protein?? then its beans and grains... They eat beans/lentils etc every single day in India, well my relatives do...
I love lentils. I'm contemplating making some lentil soup later today if I can surpress my desire to make chili instead. x
I used to eat the sanitarium veggie burgers; but I got over them! I like (not sure what they're called) the ones my mum buys that have potato in them.....mmm they're yummy! And fill me up heaps!
Beans & grains Cheapest and most versatile staple in my house. I love quorn, too-but its a splurge in comparison
