In the history of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences there have been only 3 actors who served as president of the Academy - Bette Davis, Gregory Peck and Karl Malden. Davis served a single 2-year term in the early 1940s; Peck served a single 2-year term in the mid-1960s; but Malden is the only actor in the 90+ years the Academy has existed to serve two 2-year terms as its president. Being president of the Academy is a full-time job and actors don't like to take time off from their career for that long plus it is actually a very demanding job. The fact that Karl Malden is the only the third actor since 1929 to be elected president of the Academy and the ONLY actor to ever be elected to a second term as president is evidence of how widely respected he was among in the movie industry. When Karl was asked once to what he attributed his success to he said that unlike so many fellow actors he didn't waste his money and his time drinking, smoking and gambling because he had seen so many of them ruin their careers that way.
