How is the way you are perceived in the "real world" different to the way you are perceived here?

I can't speak for how others perceive me on HF but I would assume I come across nearly the same as I do in real life. Online communication/forums does have limits in that people can't see my body language or hear my tone of voice, but I make an effort to be as clear and genuine as possible in the chats and forums.

Are you different online than in real life?

Personality-wise, I am pretty much the same in real life as I am in the chat/forums. Knowing the potential for miscommunication and that sarcasm doesn't translate through text (without the aid of an emoticon anyway...), I tend to watch what I say a lot more as to avoid offending anyone unintentionally. I'm a bit more vulgar and I tend to speak my mind a LOT more in "real life".

How much of an effort do you put in to sound funny, smart, nice, empathetic?

I don't put any more effort into it online than I do in face-to-face interactions. I have something funny to say? I say it. Empathize with someone's issues/troubles? Show it. Interacting with other people is all the same to me, be it in person or through the magicks of the Interweb tubes.

Or would you prefer to be known as an asshole?

I have no qualms with being known as an asshole, though I think I'm perceived as less of one online because, as I'd stated, I watch my tongue (or fingers in this case, I suppose) to avoid miscommunication.

Do you care if you're popular online, or not?

Not at all. I'm not online often enough to feel affected by whether or not I'm part of a "cool crowd" online. I visit the site, hang in the chat, and be myself. If that leads to popularity amongst the chat community, hells yeah. If not...*shrug*.

How would you act if you met a friend from here in real life?

I would treat as I would any of my other "real life" friends.

Do you trust and know them enough to meet up with them?

It depends on the situation. If it's someone I've chatted with quite a bit and have gotten to know/feel comfortable with, I would have no qualms with meeting them in person and hanging out. I would say 90% of the people I've met in HipChat are cool enough that I wouldn't mind meeting up in person....it's just, you know...distance is a bitch.

What are your thoughts and feelings when you recieve a compliment on a photo or post?

I totally dig the fact that someone was interested enough to view the photo and liked it enough to compliment it. Compliment's a compliment...it's hard not to feel good about them, online or not.

    What about an insult?

I dunno, haven't come across it yet. Probably wouldn't affect me too much.

Why did you choose the avatar you chose? I chose mine because it looked the most like me.

Pretty much the same reason; it looked somewhat like me and it seemed more suitable than the other options. I didn't really put a whole lot of thought into it.

Is your "virtual world" completely seperate to your "real world"? Or do they intertwine?

Separate, for the most part. I've got one "real life" friend that I'd met through HipChat so far. Otherwise, the extent of their intertwining is mentions of the site to friends.

Do you think about HF (and/or other online communities) when you're not on them?

    Not really. Rarely.

    Why do you communicate online?

It's good for when you wanting some socialization but don't feel up to going anywhere, or when your trapped in the house with nothing else going on.

Do people "get you" better here or out in the "real world"?

Real world, because it's easier to communicate vocally and get a true look at what a person's personality when you aren't limited to reading off a screen.

cHow is the way you are perceived in the "real world" different to the way you are perceived here?

can't say. does anyone really know how the whole of the rest perceives you?

Are you different online than in real life?

    yes.

How much of an effort do you put in to sound funny, smart, nice, empathetic?

not much. i just say what comes to mind...though sometimes i think we all use tact.

Or would you prefer to be known as an asshole? ;)

i guess it doesn't matter how you are perceived, because you really can't control that if your being yourself.

Do you care if you're popular online, or not?

no. i don't do it on the 'outside' so why even care for it online?

How would you act if you met a friend from here in real life?

i would probably act as if i were meeting the person for the very first time.

Do you trust and know them enough to meet up with them?

there are a few here i do trust to meet up with.

What are your thoughts and feelings when you receive a compliment on a photo or post?

'tell me something i don't know'

    What about an insult?

    see above

Why did you choose the avatar you chose?

its like the mona lisa...is it a man or woman? hahah, it caught me eye, that's why.

Is your "virtual world" completely separate to your "real world"? Or do they intertwine?

    sep.

Do you think about HF (and/or other online communities) when you're not on them?

yes. i invest some of my time here so its obvious that i would think about it when im not here. how could i log on if i didn't think about it, hf, in the first place?

    Why do you communicate online?

its in outlet for me and a supplement...for what i don't know.

Do people "get you" better here or out in the "real world"?

real world. i think its impossible for the other way around.

I'm probably perceived friendlier than I actually am.

Not much. Less friendly. Probably get a little angrier in real life.

I just say what is on my mind..or I find out.
I don't put much effort into being funny, smart, nice or empathetic.
I just try not to be the opposite.

    No.

I don't mind not being popular.
As long as i'm not talking to nobody.

Shy. But, I'd get over it eventually...If we liked each other for real.
The majority of people I'd prefer not to meet them in real life.

Not all of them. A few.

    Delighted.

    Depends who it is.
Most of the time the insults come from douchbags, so I don't care.
It it is somebody I like...I'd ask why and try and sort the situation out.

Just liked the look of it.
Perhaps it means I keep certain things about me to my self.

    Mostly seperate.
I keep in touch with family and friends.
This site is and others is completely seperate.

I sometimes think about something I have said here.
    But, generally speaking, no.
If I'm having a break from this place (I Try and stay away on a Mon/Tues/Fri)...
I don't think about the place if I'm happy with what I have said.

Because I can't shout that loud.
    Ok, I like it.
I don't get to communicate like I do online in the real world.

    Probably not.

    ;)

So.. I've been up all night. All nighter. Brain frier.

Anyway, I've come to realize (at least realize MORE) that on here we all have our own personalities. We've got things we do e.g odon's broken quotes, GLENGLEN's "Cheers Glen", Hotwater's "Hotwater", Greengirl's use of apostrophies... All these things make us stand out and (maybe with the help or a sig or avatar) we can usually pick out who they are (esp. if we know them personally), without having to check the username :)

On more than one occasion I've looked at the person's avatar, thought I've known who it was, and then been completely shocked by what they said, because it was a different user.
