Young Hippies disappoint me!!!!

i don't think you're a jerk, just kind of pompous and pretentious, and most likely unaware of your own hindsight bias. this tends to happen as people age.

but really, the whole idea of hippy moderately amuses me - it seems purposefully ignorant; it tries to slap simple solutions on complex problems, similar to a child.

Any hippy will tell you that war is bad, but what about peace-keeping? What about protecting human rights? What about self-preservation?

Or vegetarianism - people talk about saving animals while eating soy grown on soil made from clear-cutting rainforest. Soy transported 2500km (burning needless oil).

I can list off a dozen other examples. But really, I'm not trying to preach (I know it problably comes off like I am). I suppose I just feel condenscending towards ignorant ranting on messageboards - its just masturbation for the conscience.

Yeah, I do come off pompous and pretentious...I really don't mean to. I think as we age, we tend to get jaded because we see the ol' ideals get beat up. My posts look really biased on the outside, but there is a subtle (well..not always) irony to them.
It isn't so obvious, but do I read a lot more posts than I write. They do affect me.
I don't see what you just said as preaching. You brought up some extremely well thought-out questions. The last sentence was a little "over-the-top" though,"if" it was meant as a "jab".

I've never actually called myself a hippy. I embrace alot of the ideals that they did, but I also have my own ideals.
I know I come across as single-minded, and write in a peculiar style, but that is largely for literary effect.(as I imagine you had already figured out)
While my posts may appear pompous, they are not ignorant. (I am a lot less ignorant than you give me credit for)
I may have insulted the style in which you convey your message (I have apologized for that error), but never your intelligence. Please have the same consideration for me. Jeeez, I do sound pompous don't I. Thanks for sparring it was fun.

not that i particularly care about artistic copyrights. i just find it somewhat depressing that most people are lacking in that specific type of literary education. I think it has a lot to do with dumbing down of society.

An answer for what. When is war justified? Kosovo, 1999. Marking (hopefully) the beginning of a states-rights culture to the beginning of a human rights one.

What is the proper way to eat? I'm on a 100 mile diet myself, and it is much less harmful to the earth than even a vegan diet.

Explain exactly what you want here - me to recognize your "efforts"? Give you a gold star?

 

It's only a forum. If you're a "hippy" as you say and are comparing yourself to hippies who actually want to change the world, peace, yadda yadda blah, then perhaps you should stop complaining about a forum and actually do something.

Or if you're just one of 'em hippies who sits around and talks about how the world needs to be changed but never gets up off their ass, then continue to complain.

what i want is to know why you mock your stereotypical image of a hippie.Hippie is a myth and it only makes you look like a fool.

 

Jane, there are areas of this board where people discuss politics, etc., and you might find yourself feeling more in synch with some of the concerns expressed there. Please don't go away, and please do try to keep in mind that, though you can't tell from reading these posts, some of us have been hippies and activists together, and sometimes one sensibility feeds the other. Sure, it's possible to have long hair and whatever and not give a damn about anyone, etc...just as it's possible to be short-haired, high-paid, and a total jerk. I think you know that, so please temper your frustration and disappointment with the knowledge that it's all part of the human mess, and we each and all need to help each other the best we can to get through it and do better. I know your frustration, and undoubtedly sometimes feel akin to what you expressed...but feeling flows along, too, and it's good to keep that in mind. Peace out.

 

Oh, but "frustration" is the hippie way. Without it, there would be no compulsion to change the world. A lot of us fight like "cats and dogs" but still "respect each other in the morning". LOL

I am of this yonger generation that you are disapointed in, and new to this site. Most of the younger hippies have helped me and really do understand what I was taught to be the three basic hippie prinicpals by my aunt.

1. Peace before war, in everysituation.
2. Never travel with the crowd, be youself because that's all you can be.
3. Love your friends, family, and fellow man regardless of race, creed, sexuality, or looks.

I guess that things change between generations, and that you may see what we consider activism for example to be different from what you have done in your past, but if we are fighting the same fight the shouldn't we all be supportive and see how we can arrange those different tendancies to benefit our cause? I was told by a wise poster on this site, thanks for the insight wandering, that peace is not a funny little word to use as a signature...to say it only when you mean it. Well if we are going to have peace in the world, we need peace in our ranks as well. I surely hope you are no longer disapointed by the younger hippies, because we are not disapointed in you. *I hope I'm not just speaking for myself* So I will leave you with this....

I've had a run-in or two with younger folks, (and older folks) until the "self proclaimed biggest asshole" on these forums taught me to unleash my "inner grouchy ol' fart". Since then, I've realized that we're all just trying to have fun here. We mess with each other, but most people young or old don't mean anything personal by it. Granted, there are some individuals that only want to say mean things, but they're not just young guys. (and they get bored and leave eventually)

And BTW, Matt...I'm a grandpa..I know what you mean.

I'm not coming down on anybody. He kept me from quitting, and I appreciate it.

 

I believe in the whole hip way of life, I want a clean earth, I want peace and freedom, I believe in open sexuality. I also like too come on here though and have alot of fun and mostly thats what I do, but I probably should take the time too learn more. You seem to find me mostly in the random thoughts section of this site. There is something about it that draws me there. I guess I just want to be able to laugh and have a good time. I should really take more time and learn more about whats going on and get into more meaningful conversation.

 

You know something too, Ive heard from some on here that this is not a hippy site, it's a free speech site. I dont know where some of those people are comming up with that because to me it is a site for hippies and for the free speech, and both go hand in hand and for some that say it is not a site for hippies why do they think this is the hip forums. I think that was just a few smart ass hippy haters trying twist everything though.

 

No, ethnic tensions date in Serbia/Albania/etc date back much further than WW1.
