no, you'd go for business or finance! If you go for something based on it's pay you will burn out really fast!
I made this thread a while back and after long thinking, I would choose the money, and do my subject interest on my own free time. It is not the money that I want, it is the things I can get and trade money for. You have to accept reality or try to change it, we live in a money world and without money you are nothing. Your landlord if you rent will not feel sorry for you you cannot pay the rent, he/she will just kick you out. Money is everything and interest will not pay for your living.
^^^ Now you got it. Compare that to what mr.morrison said, hehe, it makes me laugh how some people are quick to point out the materialism in others but are slow to recognise it in themselves: Oh get off your high-horse, you DO need money for that van, gas and tye-dyes. And if you don’t break even then you need money somehow to keep it up. Money buys more than material possessions, it gives you more security, security from homelessness. Without a home and on the streets you stand more at risk of getting beat up, robbed, molested and arrested… I honestly don’t believe a lot of you folks who speak disparagingly about money really know what the alternative, poverty is, or appreciate what money can get you BEYOND the material possessions. With money you can pursue your interests… you can take those night courses, buy equipment, afford housing that can accommodate your interests ie. a live-in studio or a workshed, and live in safer neighbourhoods. With money you can quit your job to further pursue your interests or travel or retire early. Without money you can’t do any of these things. If you end up working 2 part-time, meaningless jobs to make ends meet you will not have the time, means or energy to pursue your interests any further. If I were to do it over again I’d do #2, make my money then while I’m still young quit and pursue my interests.
Having a career doing something I dislike, just for the money, seems like a massive waste of the precious little amount of time I have on Earth. Life is short, so live it to the best of your ability.
tis why i chose plumbing. and i agree with money isn't everything but believe me, the way the world's going and with increasingly dickhead government action, money is needed just to get by. and learning a trade is cosy coz you've always got work.
I know I'll end up hating anything I decide to have as my career, whether I liked it originally or not. Money doesn't necessarily equal happiness, but it's a lot easier to be happy with a lot of money. Think of money not as an end in itself but as a means to an end. I know how to make myself happy; I want to make a shitload of money, retire early, and live comfortably with my life partner.
hmmmm once it was subject, now its the ability to provide for myself. all things given, I would study history, as old as it gets, until I die. But realistically the Navy has given me an education in electronics, so when I go back to school , that is what I will focus on.
I am very fortunate to go to a good university (Duke). But it is expensive, and I now realize (after a couple years), that my dad wants me to earn a lot of money to make up for the tuition. In high school, I never thought about money/education/future. Now, I don't care to make a lot of money, but would like to live reasonably. Looking back, I would have gone to a cheap state school and major in something more job specific. But it's too late to get out of this school, I am now a junior. I'm majoring in history and theatre and have a 3.5 GPA. Any advice on what to do in my situation?
i'm gonna try and be sensible, but at the end of the day, i'm gonna go by intuition...pick a career that i really want to do. i reckon if i stay true to myself, the rest will take care of itself in other words, if i look after my soul, life will look after me!
I agree. If you enjoy doing something, you have compassion for it, and thats what the world needs. There are alot of doctors, and lawyers that are who they are for the money, and they have no compassion for their work, and the people they work for. So now, we have lots of lawyers who suck, and expensive doctors, who "do their job" But dont care that ur in pain and have no insurance... Dont you hate that? No insurance, and having to wait 3 hours in an emergency waiting room with a broken arm?
^ you're so right! man we need more compassion... would ya look at this planet? somewhere i read (and i also agree) that in third world countries, human spirit is so strong, and there's a real sense of community... the western world has pretty much everything, but damn, we can be a cold place. it's really sad actually. more love, less money. i mean seriously, do we REALLY need so much?
Why is that a correction? I meant to put across that although the western world is generally richer, we're not necessarily a warm place in terms of human spirit. I mean when someone's in trouble, they are dealt with through paperwork and legal systems... which are often not very personal or compassionate. In countries with lesser means, although they may not get everything else right, individual people seem to be treated with a lot more respect. Businesses generally have the same pattern. Large businesses take in a huge profit, but dealings with staff are often impersonal and they will drop staff whenever they need to. Small, privately owned, but less wealthier businesses tend to treat their staff better, and if someone needs sick leave, someone else is usually happy to step in for them. I was then saying that in order to improve the western world, we could try and make people more aware of each other's needs... and less focused on winning the 'rat race' as you said
