Hate it But to save on oil this upcoming winter, several school districts have already opted for a 4 day week (but with extended school hours) Hotwater
i agree with KC,,it keeps the kids from forgetting everything and then having to spend the first quarter of the next year reviewing the last year,, now thats a waste.. the reason for the summer break originally was for the kids to help in the fields and with the extra load of chores summer brings to farmers.. it was never intended as a vacation.. society has just become such slack asses that they think junior needs a 2 month break for play time..
It's a terrible idea. The school system was designed so that children could help with the harvest. That is why we have summers off. If we eliminated summer breaks, someone would have to pick up the slack for summer labour jobs and students would have to work continually throughout the year to garnish any savings while they are studying. Bad idea.
what kid actually does anything but fuck off during summer break anymore? very few kids as a percentage actually do work through there summer vacations anymore and even fewer on farms.. i am all for some kind of summer exemption for kids that are actually needed on the farm but otherwise they should be going to school..
I worked every summer since I was 13 to save up for my education or a new car. I could work full time hours and still fuck off when I wasn't working. Unlike school when you have to constantly plan for projects and other nagging requirements. EDIT: It was a really nice break when I was younger too, because I could still be a child for 2 whole months. I could spend a couple weeks at summer camp and spend all day playing sports or finding creative ways to keep ourselves occupied. My family could spend vacations together without worrying about the weather. I used to spend weeks camping with my family as a young child, and I helped clean up people's fields. The 2 months was great. And now that I'm older the 4 months summer vacation is even better.
i just dont think for the majority of children that much time off is a good thing.. there lazy enough and have no work ethic as it is.. then they get to run wild with no structure or responsibility for 2 months a year.. it doesnt help the problem at all..
i think its a decent idea. the u.s. k-12 system is so laxed compared to other countries its amazing. I am basically doing the year round thing for college so i can graduate early and move on to a masters program and its well worth it.
god, i remember getting so SICK of summer vacation. i could feel everything i'd worked so hard to learn ozzing right out my bored to death ears. in a few areas where they temporarily went to four day weeks in order to save on fuel, the parents decided they liked it WAY better anyway and would be pissed if they ever went back.
It was the exact opposite for me, I dreaded going back to school after 6 weeks of fun at summer camp. Hiking, backpacking, canoeing (down the lost river) swimming, playing capture the flag against the camp further down the lake, going through a dozen cans of off bug spray, bonfires at night, bug juice,..... Hotwater
I don't know about Canada, Daisy, but in America, it IS broken. The educational system, I mean. Not only does the school year need to be made to be year round, but civics and financial literacy need to be more heavily taught as well. Don't teach kids to be good students. That's foolish. That's like teaching your children to be good babies. Sure it has a time and a place, but it's a phase. It's not something to teach for the long term. Most kids don't even know what a 401(k), or superannuation plan, or whatever it's called in different areas, realy is until they get offered one. And of those who do, I doubt many know how it works. I doubt many grown folks with a 401(k) fully understand how it works. They better learn though. That one thing alone is super major, not to mention the wide array of other financial skills needed that are not being taught. Overall, the school system should be re evaluated and reformed. It's not working, and it's time to try something new. Uniforms are certainly not the answer but I don't see people opposing that shit very heavily. Year round school poses a number of different benefits in addition to doing a better job of preparing kids more for the real world.
Financially.... It's one of the most important things to teach children when you preach, "Go to school, get good grades, go to college, and get a good paying, safe job". Most of us wont be finding jobs with pensions, let alone our children. Do you fully understand the concept of a 401(k) and how you can save for years to find out that you still can't retire? Or worse that you can lose half of your retirement in the stock market without ever knowing how..... Scoff if you'd like, but along with needing to reform the scheduling of school, much of the curriculum needs to be heavily examined and altered. Financial education and civics are two of the most undervalued subjects in the educational system.
it does need re-working for sure. financial classes should be taught, but its not like the basics are super hard either. and with the idea of year round school - we better start addressing the need for more PE classes, along with bringing recess back for the kids. its not natural to sit down for that long of a day - and its why i will refuse to get a job (unless i really have to take it) that has me sitting at a desk all fucking day.
I hated high school and elementary school so much, and I would have had a mental breakdown spending 365 days a year with the nazi-like teachers and mean students. But I am doing all year around school now in university and the situation is different, and I enjoy and want to go to school year round if I can.
i had year round school, and i thought it was fine. i mean, every 3 months we got three weeks of vacation, and over the summer vacation we got extra couple weeks because of getting only three weeks during the other breaks instead of a whole month. it worked out really well for me, cause i would have HATED going home for an entire summer (i was at boarding school) and my parents would have hated it as well. come to think of it, probably why i was at a school with those sort of vacations, lol! with shorter vacations, it's much easier to find friend's families who are willing for you to come home with them for break!
The basics are taught. It's called mathematics. But aside from adding up how much one makes and adding up ones bills and savings, then subtracting the latter from the former, most people wouldn't know anything about where to put what's left over. That's the BIGGEST problem and the least addressed problem in the educational system. Aside from that there are multiple other problems including the 401(k) scenario which is actually a bigger problem, especially for those currently in their early to mid 40's. That's you, but there are a growing number of jobs that invovle just that. Sitting all day. Where did recess go? As far as I was to understand most elementary or primary schools still offer recess a couple of times a day. Plus I don't think ramping up the number of PE classes kids take will fix anything. It's a short term solution to a long term problem. I had PE classes every semester all the way up until my junior year of high school. I still sit on my keister and play x-box every chance I get. Some people just turn out to be physically lazy, while others do not. I'm a firm believer that those kinds of problems(obesity, morality, etc) are bred at home much more often than in the school.
