THank you hillbilly for your well worded threads lately, and this one.

In california 04 my crew, 'Acres of Kindness' (that year) grew organic food for the gathering. We did an 18 month project and brought 60 thousand servings of organic salad to the gathering for FREE (worth $100,000 at the market). We served from June 14 till July17 (i think). It was not even enough for main circle during the week of the gathering.

I think hhb's point is very valid. Of course we will have a gathering and it will be 'ok', but yes there will be less folks who can afford it and yes there will be food adjustments.
This whole thing is obviously manipulated by the guys in charge for the purpose of creating an excuse for their actions. I find it hard to believe the the feds didn't think that making food into fuel wouldn't raise food prices. And with oil companies making record prices in the last several years, and the feds refusing to push green . .. .

It's either on purpose or so shortsighted that that it calls for impeachment.

Of course we (rainbow) are shortsighted too. That shows in that we don't own land and live on organic farms and bring our own food to the gathering. (i personally think the gathering date should be moved to late summer so that it becomes a harvest gathering, though i know that's not happenin anytime soon).

So thank you for trying to not be shortsighted.

Our farm is now in colorado. If you would like to visit for a day, or stay and work the farm, we expect a fun summer, seeing as the gathering is one state away. You can pm me.

That's an amazing thing, and allot of mouths fed.

I agree that if rainbow was held around harvest time it would be allot easier to supply the food. I won't be able to bring much from the garden this year because nothing but the beans will be ready to go by the time I roll on outta here.
It's good to hear that everything on your farm is going good... I remember I met you at thanksgiving council in MT. Keep it real brother!

What gathering during 7/21 - 8/21? I know who and how much food was at CA '04.......................hmmmmm.

anywho..... Another reason the National should be at least a 2 weeker. Corn in alot of places is only waist high come July 4th. We consensed in Ocala to have 2 weekers and moved in the LAST 2 weeks for weather purpose's and things like to pop-up heavy in those late Feb rains and then sun. :)
I do believe the shortage of people this year will equal the food.

If were short on Food for making Fuel.....Why is there no Fuel thats ours?

I'd better go see how many cars, consumption and then Gallons/per acre of corn. HAhahaa

    Anyone know off hand?

David Pimental, a leading Cornell University agricultural expert, has calculated that powering the average U.S. automobile (thats 1 car)for one year on ethanol (blended with gasoline) derived from corn would require 11 acres of farmland, the same space needed to grow a year's supply of food for seven people.

An acre of U.S. corn yields about 7,110 pounds of corn for processing into 328 gallons of ethanol. But planting, growing and harvesting that much corn requires about 140 gallons of fossil fuels and costs $347 per acre, according to Pimentel’s analysis. Thus, even before corn is converted to ethanol, the feedstock costs $1.05 per gallon of ethanol.

The approximately $1 billion a year in current federal and state subsidies (mainly to large corporations) for ethanol production are not the only costs to consumers, the Cornell scientist observes. Subsidized corn results in higher prices for meat, milk and eggs because about 70 percent of corn grain is fed to livestock and poultry in the United States. Increasing ethanol production would further inflate corn prices, Pimentel says, noting: "In addition to paying tax dollars for ethanol subsidies, consumers would be paying significantly higher food prices in the marketplace".

f all the automobiles in the United States were fueled with 100 percent ethanol, a total of about 97 percent of U.S. land area would be needed to grow the corn feedstock. Corn would cover nearly the total land area of the United States.

^Yeah, the corn ethanol thing seems like a losing deal..

I haven’t heard a single person say anything positive about it. It is all just stupid we are going to have to change our live styles, plain and simple we can’t keep driving SUVs and cars all over.

So instead of people changing lifestyles the government just wants to change the world to suit the current lifestyle. Sounds like people at the top making money off of the cars and oil don’t want the money to go away.

I was watching birds the other day and I could see a 4-lane interstate from where I was. At least 1/3 of the cars on the interstate were SUVs with one person inside. WTF people are commuting to work everyday in 12 seat cars with one person and they want to take away food to keep this up. It’s bullshit

Bio should be made from hemp, not food crops.I know a farmer in my hometown in Cal,that's been agitating some legislators there for a while to grow it on his acreage. As usual,we can thank conservatives for the current situation concerning hemp.Guess they're afraid someone might smoke an acre or two and sue somebody because they couldn't get high.

Hemp Produces the Most Biomass of Any Plant on Earth.

Hemp is at least four times richer in biomass/cellulose potential than its nearest rivals: cornstalks, sugarcane, kenaf, trees, etc.

Hemp produces the most biomass of any crop, which is why it is the natural choice for an energy crop. Hemp converts the sun's energy into cellulose faster than any other plant, through photosynthesis. Hemp can produce 10 tons of biomass per acre every four months. Enough energy could be produced on 6% of the land in the U.S. to provide enough energy for our entire country (cars, heat homes, electricity, industry) -- and we use 25% of the world's energy.

To put which in perspective, right now we pay farmers not to grow on 6% (around 90 million acres) of the farming land, while another 500 million acres of marginal farmland lies fallow. This land could be used to grow hemp as an energy crop.

its not about conservative politics, its about bringing this country to its knees..
doesnt anyone see,no matter who we vote for, they are all just puppets for those that want to make us beg for mercy...

    Thanks HHB!!!

I was curious. A scientist I dated in the late 70's had a Vision/Working Plan of Using ALL ORGANIC WASTE FROM LANDFILLS to make fuel. Anything that rots can make FUEL!!!! He and His plan like........ vanished man.

Why use corn when your trash is even Better? Now that would be positive you would think. It still a Burning Fuel your using The Scientist would say & he was going to use his knowledge for Solar after finding the ultimate Fuel/Trash Solution.

    about the kudzu

i think i misunderstood this thread

you do not live in wyoming

the rainbow family gathering is there perhaps?

i seem to remember overhearing derry bronfield [sic?], a rightwing radio dickweed, laughing about 'nekkid hippies in wyoming' last summer, maybe that was you?

i don't get out much, no car, no money, no time

if this is true i will see if i can save up enough money to take a few days off and walk down there

    where am i walking to?

Told myself that I wasn't going to reply...but I am anyway.

We not only have to be mindful of our (american) food supply but around the world. Because where ever an area is affected it is only to spread throughout the land.

I think it is very smart to stock up on food as soon as possible.

I'm not saying anything is going to happen tonight or tomorrow or even ever, I'm just sayin' it's better safe than sorry.

Once we move to PA I will have my stock hidden from my spouse so they don't think I am a crazy loon, but we will always have food on hand if I have my way.

    Love you all,
    ~M~

Early 80's? I remember the mid 70's, gas shortages & my folks being really worried about food prices; musta been better by the early 80's cuz my mom bought my school clothes from Sears instead of K-mart & the folks decided to have 3 more kids.

You become a member by posting, thinkin' it's 25 posts...of course it's even better to become a supporter

About the food costs, rice rationing & WY '08...there isn't any rice rationing here in TX, tho the food prices are outrageous...might be more white rice in WY than brown this year, but isn't that organic farm that helped (A lot!) supply the hurricane kitchens up in that row of 'central' northern states? bet they'll kick down (& since I'm pretty sure that they have greenhouses, the harvest time issue won't come into play)
