    Big Art Challenge
    The UK Art Prize 2004

Big Art Challenge is a brand new nationally televised arts competition that is open to professional artists, art students and members of the general public throughout the United Kingdom.

Five's new art competion is supported by Arts Council England and the Arts Council of Wales. It will see traditional art-forms competing against contemporary art works. Anybody who believes they have a talent and real passion for creativity can enter. You may want to paint or sculpt, produce an installation, a film or a photograph. You can express yourself in any way you choose. In a unique event all strands of art – modern and traditional – will compete on a completely even playing field.

Top judges from the art world will scrutinise all entries and then successful applicants will be invited to bring their actual work to a submissions day at one of our four regional venues in Scotland, the North East of England, London or Wales.

A short list of regional entrants will then be invited to attend a semi-final in October with a view to making it through to the grand final in November 2004.

    Win £10,000

As well as raising their profile and attracting career building publicity through the programme, the winner of Big Art Challenge 2004 will win £10,000. There will also be a People's Prize voted for by viewers of £2000.

    </H2>How to enter

If you are over 18, this is your chance to win the prestigious Big Art Challenge. You can create a completely new work for the competition or enter an existing piece. ( Entries must not have been commercially exploited in the UK, or have been a winner in any UK Art Competition ).

    To enter:

    1. We would advise you to read the full terms and conditions before submitting your entry to Big Art Challenge to ensure that you and/or your work is eligible.

      Download Application Form here
Please note that the entry form is in PDF format. To view it, therefore, you will need to have Adobe Reader, or similar, installed on your computer. Click here to get Adobe Reader
    3. Complete the application form providing a title for your work and a 50 word description.
    4. Enclose a photograph of your work.
    5. Enclose a photograph of yourself (the artist).
    6. Enclose a cheque for £12 plus VAT (£14.10 in total) to cover associated administration costs. Please make your cheque payable to BIG ART CHALLENGE.
    7. Send your entry to:
    BIG ART CHALLENGE
    PO BOX 800
    Washington
    Tyne and Wear
    NE38 OYQ

    • - All applications must arrive by June 4th 2004.
    • - Do not send in your artwork at this stage as it cannot be returned.
    • - If you do not hear from us by August 2004 assume you haven't been successful.
    • - (If you are sending in a video entry it must be no longer than 3 minutes)
    Additional information:

The competition is open to all forms of the visual arts. There are no restrictions.

If you are sending a video piece of film please send 3 minutes only on VHS tape. For all other mediums please supply a standard photograph or digital photograph

    Please note:
You must bear in mind that, should you be successful in the initial judging phase, you will be expected to transport your artwork to a gallery at your own cost and risk and erect it, ready to be judged, in a few hours. You may therefore want to enter a piece of work that you know will be able to meet the practical implications of the competition process. Large site installations, for instance may present artists with insurmountable logistical problems.
