As somebody who rarely uses public transportation, this issue is new to me and mainly academic. Seems to me, though, it's a matter of common sense and common courtesy, If the vehicle is relatively empty, as appears to be the case in A, no problem spreading out and being comfortable. If people are pressed for space, time to reign it in. This seems to be a subset of the phenomenon of proxemics or "personal space"/"personal distance etiquette. On a crowded elevator, we expect to have a stranger standing close to us, but I've seen comedy skits about a person standing at a similar close distance to somebody when they're the only two on the elevator. 12 Tips on Defining Personal Space The Importance of Personal Space Personal Distance – Zones Is there more to it than that? I'm wondering if the concern about "manspreading" might also be about sexual display. Body language: The crotch displays of men PNAS Study Finds Expansive Postures Are More Attractive - The Atlantic A study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that men who sat in “expansive postures” got better reactions in speed dating than those who adopted a “closed posture”. Dominant, open nonverbal displays are attractive at zero-acquaintance
The point I was trying to make was that the whole manspreading thing is not about feminists been vindictive against men. It’s just one of the gripes that pop up on surveys about travelling on public transport, along with littering and pushing on before people have gotten off. Now while both men and women complained about manspreading - women traditionally complain about it more (probably because they are affected more by it because jerks been jerks they probably didn’t try it on with men, out of cowardice, or fearing it might be seen as some type of gay come on) Anyway it was seized on by alt-right types and corrupted – men and women complaining became just women - women became feminists - and the story became over the top feminists hate men so much that they want to stop them from ‘sitting naturally’. To me the story isn’t the jerks that ‘manspread’ but the jerks that have tried to turn it into a weapon to divide people, a political tool to attack feminism.
What about that scene in Predator 2 on the subway, is it anything like that IRL? I mean like, the experience of being on the public transport. I've had 2 bad experiences on public transport one was a guy kept looking at me right at me raising his eyebrows up and down. I pretended not to notice him but I just was like errr. Okay.. He ran away when the train ticket checker came on the next stop. That was Berlin. I hate Berlin. It might sound like nothing but I did feel threatened, I know what the asshole was trying to suggest and his whole demeanour was cocky and confident. I was lucky I had friends though I never raised an alarm and kept it to myself because he ran away. And the other when this drunk old guy suddenly woke up, spilled his bottle of vodka and then proceeded to fight my friend over it. Oh and then just being overcrowded in America on the buses from the airport lol. And Dubai airport when they leave you in a cattle cart in 36*c at 6am for half an hour on the runway.
It's always interesting to me how these threads evolve. I went straight from page 1 to page 11 and it's now about 'manspreading' (which I had to Google). I'll check again in 10 pages or so.
Anyone who's constantly being political on FB gets unfollowed but not unfriended in a hurry, and that's true regardless of the ideology the person is trying to push.
OK to tie this up A person can be open and friendly toward someone but not have them as a real friend - people usually want to talk to someone find out what their views and attitudes are before deciding to acknowledge them as a ‘friend’. From reading the Pew research it seems to me that lefties are more likely to be open and friendly toward others while those on the right are more insular. So lefties are more likely to ‘befriend’ others (while not making them real friends) but that means that if they find such people hold irrational or silly views or attitudes then they are more likely to ‘unfriend’ such people. So let us take someone like Bedlam as an example – I’m open to talking to him (befriend) but after finding out he believes in silly things like the manspreading issue been a conspiracy by vindictive feminists to attack men I’m less likely to see him as a friendly (unfriending) I’ll carry on talking to him, he may go up in my estimation by realising his mistake, anyway I don’t have to see someone as a friend to talk to them, but not everyone gets on my Xmas list.
@Balbus At this point, it seems like you're just looking for an argument, I'm glad to turn you over again to 6 eyed shaman for that.
I don't even think it can be simplified like that.. Lefties are more friendly.. Right more insular.. What? There are so many types of people on both political leanings that I don't think it works even as a generalisation.
You can't expect me to believe you've never cracked any crude and insensitive jokes toward your ideological opponents. Sweet ol' kind hearted, puritanical Okiefreak. LOL. Zero jokes toward birthers, tea-baggers, rightwingers, etc. One cause and effect behind the body positivity movement, is that they've managed to draw in a lot more unattractive people to the left wing. But I'll just quote my favorite childhood author Roald Dahl from his book, The Twits, “If a person has ugly thoughts, it begins to show on the face. And when that person has ugly thoughts every day, every week, every year, the face gets uglier and uglier until you can hardly bear to look at it. A person who has good thoughts cannot ever be ugly. You can have a wonky nose and a crooked mouth and a double chin and stick-out teeth, but if you have good thoughts it will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely.” The thing is that I've grown up laughing at and telling blonde jokes. Yet I'm very blonde myself. So I have a hard time sympathizing with people who want to shut down freedom of speech because they're offended. "I'm offended" is not an argument
It has a tendency to turn women into pieces of shit like this: Russian activist combats 'manspreading' by pouring water and bleach | Daily Mail Online And turn men into self loathing soy boys like this:
As a matter of fact, now that I think of it, I can't recall a single one--possibly because most of my friends are my ideological opponents and I wouldn't want to end the friendships.I don't think I even know any of those jokes. " A birther and a tea-bagger went into a bar... How does it go from there? That's beautiful. So what happened? Didn't you understand your favorite childhood author, or was it growing up that made you superficial? Betcha the blond jokes weren't about males. Blond jokes are never about blond males. I agree with you there. We need to tolerate tasteless and stupid speech for the sake of the "marketplace of ideas". Doesn't make them less tasteless and stupid.
Beavis, you keep telling everyone you're not calling me a racist. But you keep on repeating this shit: It's as if you're not even listening to what myself and others are telling you. This is a false equivalence. You are so overly sensitive, and you keep insinutating that I'm a racist because you're still upset that I described my date as brown and Mexican. Truth be told, you'd be just as upset if I described her as a Black Jamacian, or a White South African girl. Nobody can have an actual conversation with you because you keep repeating and regurgitating the same debunked talking points again and again. You are the definition of a new meme, the NPC (Non-player character) Behold, the gray skinned, blank faced NPC Wojack: If you're familiar with online video gaming, the NPC is a character in the game that is not played by another person. It is a character that repeats the same lines it was programed to say. NPCs are predictable, and lack any rational thought process. NPCs, like leftists, are programmed to say the same buzzwords when their ideas get challenged: "Racist! Sexist! Abelist! White privilige! Patriarchy! Mysoginy! Transphobe! Bigot!" And more... NPCs are programmed by their corporate media masters. More info on the NPC meme: NPC Wojak | Know Your Meme
I actually cant take the irony right now Like leftists lol Stupid people repeating buzz words can definitely be found along the entire political spectrum
