Sounds pretty gross / creepy... however...
if they found a totally safe way to produce tuna flesh that had never been an actual living being...I might have to give in.
That's the only meat I really miss. Mmmm, tuna.

Well they can't make it tuna without it coming from tuna...

If they killed one tuna to make a million tons of tuna meat, I would probably be in favor of it -- hypothetically, of course. It's a pretty ridiculous scenario. I'm just sayin'

It is damned creepy. And there's no way to know if the shit is gonna give people cancer twenty years later or cause mutations or whatever.
Sounds like a sci-fi story in the making.

They don't kill any animals , that is the point.

This is true, i have read people eat way too much for any other reason than they are eating it for pleasure [as thoughtless as that is].. i feel sorry for there colon.

As he is banned [for the time being] i do believe i can answer for him: 'he was joking'.

They do not kill any animals [read the article].. ;)

eww, too gross. i feel so much healthier for not eating meat in the first place that i don't think i'd go back, no matter what.

not to mention, i wouldn't eat -anything- that had been grown in a petri dish, animal or otherwise...

I don't think it is a 'petri dish' as such just a vast tray in a large factory churning out processed meat.. does this make it any more appetising ?.

they dont kill animals, although am I mistaken to believe that most veggies/vegans, including myself don't agree with using animals for food, exploiting them at our discretion?! Either way, you still must USE an animal to obtain the cell, to grow the meat...which is still exploitation in my opinion.

Great, there would just be more lab animals than farm animals...WEE :-/

How would you like to be that one animal chosen to obtain the cells from?

That's my question. The theory of just using ONE animal to produce more food STILL does NOT square with me...that ONE animal STILL has feelings and a life.

I can not believe how many veggies would actually CONSIDER this...

I don't agree with exploitation as such.. but better this than a bolt through the brain.. i think it might be a little more humane .. but i don't know, you have a fair point.

I feel you are a bit angry.. Ok if i was chosen i would think i was doing the animal kingdom a service .. because i would be saving hundreds if not thousands of other animals lives. It is a better solution than the wanton slaughter we have at the moment.. imho.

Just sounds disgusting to me, so probably wouldn't forego my vegetarian diet for some "cruelty-free spam."

I say "cruelty-free" because the article quotes the researchers as saying, "the cells needed to grow chunks of meat can be taken without harming the donor animal." That's a definite plus.

But I still question the need. Isn't it cheaper, healthier and easier to feed starving and malnourished people grains, nuts, cereals, vegetables and fruit, than harvested flesh from labs?

But then again, if this "lab meat" replaces the processed chicken flesh, hot dogs, hamburgers, etc. that people will always demand, while at the same time eliminates the slaughter of animals, this is a good thing.

a bit angry with the idea of this yes, angry with you, no.

Maybe it's just that I HATE the idea of labs. I really do. And it sounds so unhealthy and unnatural. I can't imagine that being good for you.

And the fact that veggies would consider eating it worries me too, because imo it defeats entire purpose of being a veggie.

I would give mad props to a meat eater that chose to eat THIS meat instead of factory farmed meat, yes. It would make the killing of animals go way down I'm sure...

You make a good point, definitely..and I'd be glad to see less animals being killed, however I'm just way too much of a naturalist to actually come to terms and agree with it.

I was commenting on your first post clicked on 'submit reply' and it seemed like you had taken a breath and started AGAIN getting a bit cross with me :& .. I was like 'what the hell' .. I appreciate this is a sensitive subject and understand that it can stir up the emotions [thats one of the reasons i started this thread] . . Thanks for explaining that you were angry at the concept not me.. remind me never to get on your wrong side :p .

I have thought about it [since i posted this thread] and persoanly i would not go for it. It is hypocrisy, i had trouble reconciling this fact... not the type of veggie you are i think. too me it seemed like it was removing the cruelty so it is 'ethical' meat, but i don't know just seems a good excuse on my part.
I think it is a good idea to help developing countries and reducing the need for slaughtering animals .. Thats a good thing.
I too would give 'mad props' to meat eaters for choosing this as a compromise

Thanks for the image of yourself throwing up.. i am giggling now. *giggles*.
