In the Reagan administration’s attempt to slash $1.5 billion from children’s nutrition funding, school lunch program requirements were worded (whether deliberately or not) so as to conceivably allow for designating ketchup as a vegetable, allowing the USDA to eliminate one of the two vegetables required to meet minimum food and nutrition standards, and thus shrink costs.
Can you provide a source on that? Everything I'm finding online is attributing that to the Reagan-appointed USDA head and not to his wife. Like, I'm not able to find a single source blaming Nancy Reagan for this. Of course, even if she said the phrase, it doesn't change the fact that the Reagan administration still slashed the school lunch budget by 25% and looked for loopholes such as classifying condiments as vegetables. It lasted a month due to outcry from both the democrats and the public.
The fact that Reagan closed the mental health clinics in California leaving thousands with no care ,-became ironic when he lost his mind due to dementia. Republicans--gotta love ém. I can't figure out why those damn poor kids insist on getting lunches. The nerve!
All world leaders work for the benefit of the elite and throw crumbs to us lesser mortals. Now it is mostly sound bites.
Yup. It's the way of the world---mostly. The Scandinavian countries do somewhat better for their citizens. Here, it's "shut up, get on the treadmill, pay your taxes, never mind what the rich do--it 's none of your business , don't even THINK about agitating for a union. You take what you're given and like it--or else. There are plenty of slugs around that would love to have your piss poor paying job!!
This is exactly why Schools should be a State issue not Federal. Too much Federal interference is what has caused half the problems in our country.
Public schools are already a state and local responsibility. The state decides the K-12 content standards, that is, what specific goals are to be reached at each grade level. Here is an example from Pennsylvania's Academic Standards for Science and Technology: 3.1. Unifying Themes 3.1.4. GRADE 4 Pennsylvania’s public schools shall teach, challenge and support every student to realize his or her maximum potential and to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to . . . A. Know that natural and human-made objects are made up of parts. • Identify and describe what parts make up a system. • Identify system parts that are natural and human-made (e.g., ball point pen, simple electrical circuits, plant anatomy). • Describe the purpose of analyzing systems. • Know that technologies include physical technology systems (e.g., construction, manufacturing, transportation), informational systems and biochemical-related systems. The local school district then devises a curriculum to address the standards. There are about 500 local school districts in PA...each with its own curriculum. The curriculum is submitted to the state for approval and each teacher must follow the approved curriculum. Here is PA's School code. The Federal government does not set standards or curriculum, however it does supply about 8% of the funding. In addition it guarantees an equal access to education. (No more segregated schools) and it guarantees student and teacher rights. It also issues a non binding report on each school.
I may have said this before long ago. The success or failure of a president is situational. Factors that are important include: (1) What Party controls congress; (2) Is the country at was or at peace; (3) the budget is unbalanced; External factors such as Opec Cost Increases; (4) National Disasters such as wildfires, hurricanes, floods; (5) Scandals within the administration. Some presidents seem to thrive when there are multiple setbacks and others do not. Kennedy and Clinton seemed to land on their feet when challenged. Carter and Trump seemed to collapse due to lack of creativity. It will be interesting to see how trump does the second time around.
Oh, he'll do just fine with the suck- ass republicans including the right wing supporters on the so-called supreme court shoving their noses UP HIS ASS!! No contest on this one--the fat ,immoral pig wins hands down.
I understand the frustration with right wing attitudes and a pathological liar in the white house. Every time Trump takes credit for something that someone else accomplished I feel like throwing up. Especially the inflation which Trumps first tax cut caused by Trillions of dollard to worthless parasites, corrupt corporations and Oligarchs.. It is time to funnel frustration into action. We can start by developing petitions to recall legislators who blindly support the Lying Felon. We can surely fire some of these cowards before the next congressional election.
Unfortunately, we don't have recall at the federal level. We're stuck with the legislators we elected until the next election, if there is another fair one.
Thank you for the information. You are never too old to lern something. It is not surprising, becuse they make the Laws.
