I don't think anything could have been done by either Franklin Pierce or James Buchanan to prevent civil war. The South was determined to have its way. Those who blame Buchanan should point out specifically what he could have done as a lame duck president, which he was after Lincoln's election in November 1860, to prevent war. No lame duck president nor any responsible one in that situation would start a war knowing his successor would inherit it. The political class that ruled South Carolina was far more to blame for war breaking out than Buchanan was.

Eisenhower was a W.War II famous general. That's how he got to be President. His support for the Civil Rights Act was significant, and the act did establish the U.S. Civil Rights Commission, but its effect was limited thanks to the fillibustering of major provisions by Strom Thurman. "Stamped out communism" what a ridiculous claim. NASA was his response to Sputnik. But Obama's major achievement was to get the U.S. out of the hole the Republicans dug for us with the 2008 Recession!

And Biden is going to have to get us out of the hole Trump dug. If handled competently, we'd be coming out of the pandemic right now like a lot of other countries. Instead, we haven't even peaked yet. On top of that, we have massive deficits, which Republicans always seem to leave behind after they leave office. And then there are all the hearings that are going to be necessary to get to the bottom of all the corruption. Let's hope Democrats don't wimp out on that.
