I understand your point. But I think even after addressing the history issue he may end up the worst. Sure we've had some bad ones, but he seemed to exceed even their expectations, and no one had the guts to rein either him or Cheney in. And we will be dealing with their excesses for years. And they started way before 09/11. I lay Enron and WorldCom on them. Clinton may have had some part in that, but I remember Bush telling California they were going to have to find their own solution, when Enron evaporated and the citizens of California were paying three times their winter energy bills. You can't legislate corrupt businesses or financial ventures...why exactly is that? When did we start protecting their rights at the expense of the society?
Some people demonize him for trampling on state rights and increasing the power of the presidency, apparently presidents are supposed to just let rebellions go unchecked. Also his suspension of habeus corupus despite the fact it's specifically allowed in the constitution during times of rebellion.
Because Rush did a thing on him: http://www.davidlouisedelman.com/current-events/abraham-lincoln/ He had his flaws, but none that add up to the multitde of Bush/Cheney.
I voted for Gee Dub because this poll is about Presidents but man I blame Faux News and Limbaugh more than anything/anyone. Talk about propaganda.
Interesting fact, Pierce was the first and only president to "affirm" the oath of office instead of swearing it, and did so on a law book instead of a bible. John Quincy Adams and Teddy Roosevelt also did not use a bible but swore instead of affirmed.
Maybe, but: "Pierce chose to "affirm" his oath of office rather than swear it, becoming the first president to do so; he placed his hand on a law book rather than on a Bible while doing so. He was also the first president to recite his inaugural address from memory." Got to give him points for that. A president that didn't stoop to playing the religion card. Or one that needed a teleprompter. And this at least he stuck to his guns: "He was unable to steer a steady, prudent course that might have sustained a broad measure of support. Having publicly committed himself to an ill-considered position, he maintained it steadfastly, but at disastrous cost to his reputation." I'd rather that than a president that switches positions to gain votes.
Buchanan is up there, but he only served one term. Bush served two and started two wars on foreign soil both prememptive. Both of which are still active after nine years.
There's a fine line between being steadfast and being stubborn. I will give him a point for his memory. However, Theodore Roosevelt call him "a servile tool for the slavery leaders"
James Madison: As fourth President of the U.S., he invaded Canada in 1812, starting three years of war and causing thousands of deaths. The war is considered indecisive by historians. Most Americans who invade Canada these days have cameras around their necks, and credit cards. Few Canadians want to invade the U.S., now or then. Who'd want it?
With all this in mind, since Obama has continued all the above mentioned policies with complete negligence to change Bush's legacy, wouldn't THAT make Obama the WORST president?
None of us were alive during Lincoln's presidency so we must all depend on history in making that judgement -- he may have had the most difficult time of any. Most here are probably too young to remember several, if not most, others on the list. Having lived throught the presidency of all on the list, excepting Lincoln (of course), my vote is for Jimmy Carter as the worst. He may have been the most morally upstanding of any, but his presidency was a complete failure as far being good for our nation. atriot:
