Which is one of the points I was trying to make abut Pepper Spray. That is also why I recommended a self defence class. I initially recomended the house key to show an alternative to Pepper Spray. One that is easier to use and that you are less likely to hurt yourself with. If you accidentally Pepper Spray yourself you are actually making an attackers job easier. While I don't advocate violence. Or the arming of 14 year olds. I do advocate informed decision making. Over the past couple of years in Berkeley there have been a couple of rashes of Sexual Assaults. The description that has been given of the suspects has been: Male, 5' 9", 160 lbs, Long Dark Brown or Black Hair, Beard, Brown Eyes. My description: Male, 5' 9", 160 lbs, Long Dark Brown (Or Black if it is dark out)Hair, Beard, Hazel Eyes. Sometimes I work at night. Sometimes I walk home at 2 am. Just enough light to make me look dangerous. It prevents me from getting mugged. But it also makes me look like a "Potential Rapist". (According to Andrea Dworkin all men are "Potential Rapists" but I digress). But I'm also about the first person to step in when I see an assault. Long story short I don't want to be stabbed or peppersprayed because I'm walking home at night. I just want this clear: I never seriously considered pepper spray. I was merely trying to say that pepper spray had come into my head as a notion, but I was never going to acually buy pepper spray and start carrying it around in my pocket. It was merely the result of a brainstorm. Besides, I wasn't sure of the exact regulations of ppper spray, what I would need to do, and if I could be reprimanded at schol for pepper spray possesion. I said that, and then someone says that he had posted the age earlier, and that I'd do myself a sevice by reading every post on this thread (in a rather rude manner). I got mad because I have been extremely worried over this for the past few weeks, and for someone to think I am not taking this thread seriously upsets me. That's all. When I was at school, some girls used to spread rumours that certain teachers would be 'pervs' and you'd hear this about teachers in all the schools. You don't realise how things like this ruin people's lives and careers, especially if you don't even know the truth. I don't make my judgements based on uninformed gossip.
I've been debating in my head wether to tell this story or not but I'm going to go for it. I was staying in a youth hostel in SF for about 2 years. I am an extremely nice guy until it is no longer time to be a nice guy. I befrended an older woman who in retrospect had a severe mental illness. We would just hang out and watch movies like friends do. Maybe I gave her a hug I give everybody hugs I'm a hippie that's my thing but honestly I don't remember. She seemed like the type who bruised easily so one morning she woke up with bruises on her thighs. She had mentioned in passing an ex-boyfried drugging and raping her (If it actually happened I feel sorry for her. I know tht sounds cold but once I finish this story you'll understand.) So she comes to me and tells me that she is convinced that her ex-boyfriend broke into her room and drugged and raped her. I patiently explained how unlikely it was because he would have to figure out the combination for the front door, get past the front desk, figure out which room is hers, Somehow pick the lock without waking her up or drawing the attention of the other tweekers who lived there. She then moved to another hostel and modified her delusion. The new version was that I helped her ex-boyfriend break into the hostel got him into her room and drugged and raped her. She bought me breakfast before I had class and sprung her new theory on me and asked me if it happened repeatedly for an hour. I denied it because it wasn't true. She then went to the Hostel manager who fortunately knew me for 2 years and sprung her theory on her. He told her the truth that he himself was an abuse survivor and that was a heavy accusation to lay on anyone and that he knew me for a long time and that I would never do that. Usually if you are suspected of something like that in a Hostel they will throw you out and call other hostels with your name for the safety of other guests. Fortunatley the manager knew me because homelessness sucks. Then the delusion evolved further. The new version of the story became her ex-boyfriend and I broke into her room drugged and raped her and nobody else in the hostel did anything because everybody hated her and thought she deserved it. Now this was just one person elaborating on their own shit with no truth. Fortunately I am a fairly large personality and disgustingly honest. That is the type of thing that can ruin a life and I dodged a bullet. So when you hear rumors like the one about your neighbor become 100% certain of the facts otherwise the lynch mob mentality has a chance to take over and the blood will be on all hands.
