Some called it buying a championship, others called it breaking the curse!

It does happen that teams do buy championships, I would hardly call it that for the RedSox. And heres why...

They have always spent the money, just not wisely. Teams that are put together in bought championships are dismantled quickly - see Florida Marlins for details. Since the RedSox pretty much went about trying to keep pace both in standings and in salary after the World Series run, its hardly a situation where they just opened the checkbook to break the curse without caring about their long-term financial model. Boston has always spent the money, so its not a rental team like some champs have been.
The Sox even kept those guys together long enough to win a second time (as a cubs fan, i have to say, it must be easier to be played out after two WS titles, something i wouldnt know anything about!)

As for financial models, much has been written and said about the economics of baseball, but I will leave it with this - nobody thinks less of an actor or musician making a ton of money for being a quality entertainer and yet they are way less likely to sustain a career threatening injury in the course of their act. Athletes put it out there to entertain at a higher risk factor, musicians only risk tinnitus!

Role models - at what point has the term "baseball player" inspired morality? Some of them are good, some bad but most of them a mix of both just like the rest of humanity. To expect otherwise is to be disappointed.

The point you make in your post that I totally agree with - and I do think its a huge one - free media for fans. The thing that made baseball popular is accessibility and charging huge amounts for it hurts the fan base. Its something the next commissioner will have to deal with - hopefully January 2013 when Bud finally hits the road. He has been more trouble to the game than a card game between denny mclain and pete rose while on a drinking binge with billy martin. The Black sox only threw a few games, selig has conspired for years and only once hes gone will the game have a chance to reclaim the title of national pastime.

I do think some of the worst coverage the past ten years has been the nationally broadcast free games - Fox seems to pick the worst games and has announcers who are almost unlistenable, which to me also kills any chance of winning a new fan even when there is a good game on. Will someone PLEASE tell Tim McCarver to pipe down while I am watchin the game?

Many baseball fans arent TV watchers only, generally speaking, as the game wasnt designed to be packaged for those with short attention spans. The slow summer game goes away in the fall and is replaced by a tense drama that can be drawn out even farther - for those expecting the pace to be the same as a video game version Im sure it gets tedious!

    Great convo, i diggit!

Real championships are won and lost in one single game, not 9. May as well chuck in another 10 years on top, we all lost interest anyways.

I used to call it buying a championship myself... I find myself pulling for the teams with relatively low payrolls.

The main issue from me now is the unchecked money addiction that has the big three in pro sports (MLB, NFL, NBA) surreptitiously pulling revenue for basic programming services that are marketed to people looking to trim their budgets- something this economic "situation" is necessitating- and as the political machine bandies about phrases like "shared sacrifice" to create the illusion that they care what's going on with the public, the sports facets of entertainment that for decades had not exacted one red cent from folks who just wanted to kick back and take in a ballgame- in part because the franchise cost structure could be met through ticket and merchandise sales has become so out of control through the ego-driven spiraling costs of the player/commodity- began to help subsidize the money addiction of a beast that has grown way out of proportion to the fan base it claims to care about- and pass those costs in ever increasing increments through rate increases that were not properly warned about or justified.

The incremental increases resulting from "easing in" licensing costs of previously over the air television began happening once those local broadcast stations went digital- a change that was sold as being for the purpose of improving the signal.

Bullshit. Clearly it was for no other purpose than to enhance revenue because professional sports salaries are simply not keeping up with inflation- do you know how much it costs to fill the tank of a Rolls these days? I haven't a clue- I have to fill the tank of a Civic.... surely there can't be a correlation. Luckily I've been able to re-arrange my expenses to accommodate this by shutting off the drivel that oozes out the coaxial cable into the mind control box. It's a win-win.... akin to the physical liberation sensed after giving up junk food.

I've reached to point where I'm not sure I'd have cared all that much if Boston had actually made the post season- even had they made it to the last seven games of the season. I may have listened on the radio- until that goes digital to "improve reception" (of money).

again we agree, I love to watch the rays put together a team that costs less than two yankee players, and almost less than two red sox players. I think almost everyone enjoys seeing them make the playoffs, its a blow to the established order. However, even they are on totally shaky ground due to the current commissioners blatant disregard of baseball finance... dont get me started again, this guy has been terrible to fans and the game of baseball.

When you bring the other sports into the conversation, you have the advantage of me - I am not a "sports" fan, i am a baseball fan only. I have no clue about how or why the NFL or NBA does anything other than how it pertains to baseball. I kinda prefer it when those guys go out on strike, as it makes less distractions during the Serie del Caribe!

and now for something completely different:

Good thing the Red Sox aren’t playing in the World Series or the game thursday night at Fenway Park might have been cancelled due to snow [IMG]

Besides the errors early on, that was the best World Series game I've ever seen.

I'm kind of surprised I've enjoyed the WS as much as I have even though the Yanks or Red Sox aren't in it! Go, Rangers!
