i suppose that would depend on your regional accent.

I think all men need to start spelling men as "mon" in order to separate themselves from the "woMEN", which implies that men are only a part of a woman and nothing more.

Okay, then why do you find it derogative and offensive?

Haha! That's excellent, I'll remember that.

It's usually used by feminists 'of a certain age', because it's really an 80s political correctness thing and has never been accepted or used outside of those kinds of circles. Personally I can't stand it for all sort of etymological reasons; it's grating to the eye and the brain!

'Woman' is derived from Old English "wifmann", meaning wife-man, in which "man" is gender neutral, it refers to a person of either sex, but "wife" (now "wo") is the part which defines the woman as a bride. So really if they wanted to change it they should get rid of the "wo", not the "man". At best it's etymologically unsound, at worst it can even be seen as misandry.

The women and men who choose to write "womyn or wimin" have their reasons. It is considered by many as a progressive evolution of language to be more inclusive to all genders. Baby steps. Expanding your mind and trying to understand might just yield positive results, people! Also, it's interesting to note that those who are unwilling to even consider understanding the reasoning behind the woman/womyn question are also those that use the word "retarded" to describe the situation. How inclusive of you all. Anywho, just thoughts. From a womyn's point of view.
    Peace energy to you all,

There is also the issue of the pronunciation, "womyn" would seem to demand to be pronounced as the plural "women", wouldn't it?

I'm surprise so many people are bothered by it. It's not nearly as annoying as people who type the first letter of every word in caps, now thats a mind fuck!

Get over it. Its not important

if youre referring to someone doing that on these forums, its because they typed with the capslock on and the forums automatically Change It To Capitalize Every Word Instead Of Using Caps For The Whole Word (only works when the whole message is caps mind you)

Well, I've seen it spelled 'wimmin', too. So that would take that masculine 'y' (why?) out.

On a similar, strange note, to me woman looks like w/o man, as in 'without' man.

I took a women's lit. class in high school and "womyn' and 'wimmin' came up a lot. I don't think it's so funny. So many women have been through so much shit at the hands of men, myself included, that I can see why some of us would like to be separated.

I think we are just trained to accept life as second class citizens. We can't safely go outside at night, and we take that for granted. That's just how it is for women. Why?

Every three minutes a woman is raped. The vast majority of rapes are unreported. Why? Because women are afraid of what it will do to their reputation, will their friends support them, will they be believed? Maybe their husband's the one doing it.

Rape and domestic violence are a national epidemic, but as women we go through every day trying to dodge the freaking bullet of horny , violent men. Some of us have been through a lot. So, if some women want to to spell it different, that's fine with me. I don't give a shit what any men think about it.

It's a feminist thing, they're basically rejecting the word "men" in the word.

you're preaching to the choir about rape/harassment. one shouldn't assume that because i find a spelling silly and pointless that i don't know the plight of myself.

I think spelling the word differently for empowerment is silly. Its only showing that we further bind ourselves to society, when we so obviously are trying to demean its meaning. If you really want to get into it - and I do :p - To spell woman as womyn would be silly first of all because we are all human - hu-man - however, we are only thinking of ourselves as humans to give us an edge. biologically speaking we are only animals. To say that we as humans are different from animals, while true, is wrong because every thing that inhabits the earth has the same purpose, which is biologically to evolve and create more life. Humans show animal charictaristics, but they are hidden almost, because of our nature. Humans are only the eventual result of incredibly smart and adaptable animals.
I don't know if that made any sence... I'm kind of coming off the tailspin of an acid-trip

The funny thing is, men and women are not all that different, except for maybe small physical differences. most of the differences between men and women are the products of cosmetics used by women to "woo" men. :D

The people who spell "womyn" should find another reason for spelling it that way.

From now on I would like to be called Weeman, because i am a bit smaller than a man. I will take great offense to woman and womyn. I have the right to be called whatever I want. Fuck the way everyone else spells woman and womyn isn't radical enough for me aymore.
