i think it was the bit where you were talkin bout women being MADE to enlist...? My point, which i totally failed to illustrate, was that neither Males NOR Females should be made to enlist.... PEOPLE should be given the facts about the reasons for any war, (i mean, we ARE supposed to be living in a democratic kind of society... supposed to, but that's a whole other thread) and then people, both males and females, should have the right to decide whether to enlist or not...

i can certainly see from your posts that we are in agreement over many issues... i just used a small part of what you'd said (i intended to at least) because it triggered a thought in my head and then i just bluuuuurbed it in a post... but i kinda went offt on a tangent and kinda missed the point.... sorry :grouphug:

Heh, yeah, never meant to come across as if to say people should almost certainly enlist. I am against any kind of war, i'd rather see the fighting simply end

Let's stop debating who should and shouldn't fight, and instead people, let's instead convince the powers that be that a simple game of connect four might suffice

try and stop everybody shooting each other. Loser buys the round, as well as loses the battle

Another interesting note: In most wars over the last century, for every soldier that has died, between 10 and 100 civilians have died. And this doesn't tend to discriminate by gender. Sure, it's not 'our' women getting slaughtered, it 'theirs'. And this makes it better how?

Feminism's work is far, far from over. So long as the vast majority of decisions in our society are made by a tiny fraction of the populace, and so long as that tiny group is 97% male, and chosen through alpha male hyper-competitive dominance struggles, feminism still has work to do.

I'll add here, again, some interesting points that have arisen from study of aboriginal cultures. It seems, much to the contrary of prevailing notions, that the majority of such cultures tend to exist in a fairly gender egalitarian state. At least those that have not come into conflict with, or been overly influenced by, 'civilized' cultures. A fascinating thing has been observed though. If such a culture comes under stress, from lack of resources or from outside danger, it tends to switch to a male dominant system. Leadership goes immediately to the most aggressive, competitive males. The cultures becomes more violent, more competitive, and far more short-sighted. When the crisis abates, the culture reverts back to the more peaceful, more sustainable egalitarian system.

The thing here is, it's not that -men- are more violent, per se. It's that men choose as leaders amongst themselves those who are most violent, most hyper-competitive, most capable of dealing with immediate crisis. Somehow, we got caught in a permanent state of crisis. And the result? Centuries, millenia of non-stop war. And now, our short-sightedness is bringing us to the brink of annihilation. Our hyper-competitiveness leaves billions to suffer in poverty, while there is in truth plenty for all.

Feminism, for me, is not just about giving women an equal chance, though that is a part. It's about setting aright a fatal imbalance at the very heart of modern society. If women do not gain an equal say, if we continue to give leadership only to those who gain the respect of men, through competition and aggression, I think we are very near the end of our existence, as a species.

As for the person that claims feminism is dead or near to extinction and has run it's course due to it having no need any longer- I must disagree. As a woman, the attitudes I encounter in our society and the obstacles I have overcome tell me otherwise. And when we let an idea simply die, feeling that it has become obsolete-that's when we fail to progress and start to regress back into the original state of things.
