It's been 4 years since I've needed a winter jacket. I use to wear a Columbia 3-1 type coat. At the moment, I have a 3/4 pea coat and a lined fleece. I still need to purchase a warmer coat.
A 1950's Army trenchcoat with wool liner, a leather bomber jacket W/wool liner (no fur collar), and a leather biker's jacket. There's a few "plastic" coats around here too...
I have two snowboarding coats that are just shells. One is an Oakley that i bought in 98 i think...still in great shape cause i take care of them. I have a carhartt coat that is my toughest coat that i wear the jacket will get abused...20ft 2x4 sliding across your arm, cut fire food ect ect ect and it is very warm. Ive worn it with only a t-shirt underneath at -10F below and was fine, cause i was walking... Then i have my snowboard/ski coat. It has pants that wont last as long as the coat, that zip together, great system. Was very expensive and i plan on using the coat for another 15+ years, ive never owned a jacket like it, ive had it for 4 years now and it looks no different than when i bought it..the outside feels and looks like some kind of soft sandpaper, its the best coat i have ever owned, its also a shell, no air gets in unless i let it.
I probably have too many coats as I search for the perfect coat. One is so warm that I can usually only wear it one week out of the year. Still I tend to wear one that I got from Lands End back in the 80's. It is basically a shell type coat that can be worn all year long and I can wear layers under it as it gets colder. I just like the multiple pockets on this coat so I can carry everything I need and not have to carry a purse. There are handwarmer pockets, and pockets over those to carry poop bags for dog walking, keys, gloves, treats for the dog and a pocket for my wallet. It used to be somewhat water proof but over the years that has changed. I am sure it looks bad at this point but I really don't care what I look like as long as I am warm.
I rotate between 3 coats depending on the conditions. Authentic WWII Army-Air Force winter jacket Down Coat (machine washable) LL Bean Down coat which I bought 15 years ago. Back in 2003 I stood in temperatures of minus 30 below F with winds of 40 mph and couldn’t have been more comfortable. Hotwater
A thick sports type waterproof coat - puffa type. A medium weight waterproof winter coat My best woolen winter coat - which I don't like leaving in cloakrooms etc. Several shorter fleece type things and macs. I might buy an Arctic camouflage style coat, because I think they look cool. And maybe I'll need a heavy duty super-cold coat, as British winters have been pretty mild over the last few years or so.
I have a green carhartt, a black ski coat, a couple leather coats that can be pretty warm, and several light jackets. A lot of times I'll wear a hoody and a light jacket instead of a heavier one. O and I have a couple pairs of coveralls too....
