I found a nice list of Windows updates to ignore for Windows 7 / 8 regarding the Windows 10 Upgrade notification and other possible security issues some people might be concerned about. Thought I'd share it if anyone's interested. http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/173752-how-to-avoid-being-upgraded-to-win-10-against-your-will/ I know, it's a little late now (seeing as Win10 was released July 29), but still useful information. I'm sure there are still tons of people out there waiting for their upgrade to be ready.
Uninstall Windows 7/8/8.1 Telemetry Updates (and WGX [Windows 10 Update Notifications]) with this simple script! (Telemetry = Microsoft user data/Customer Experience Program) https://gist.github.com/xvitaly/eafa75ed2cb79b3bd4e9 Haven't researched this much, but it looks legit? Can anyone confirm? In other words, use at your own risk
My issue is that Windows keeps trying to trick me into upgrading to 10, which I do not want to do. I use Windows 7 currently, and I have no problem with this operating system. I've also heard a few horror stories from friends who lost all of the files on their computers, after upgrading. My laptop is my baby, and I'd be devastated and have some major inconveniences if I were to lose all of my files. Why is Windows continuously trying to trick me into upgrading? I find this unethical and invasive. I have looked online for how to stop this, and all I could find were downloadable patches to stop Windows from trying to upgrade. Well, I don't think downloading a patch is a viable solution to this problem either. I am at the point where I want to get on the phone and call a customer support person at Microsoft and give them a piece of my mind.
I'm going to phone someone at Microsoft and tell them to suck my dick. That will teach them to be unethical and invasive.
You could back all of your files up and install a pirated version of Windows 7. You won't be able to upgrade (you'll be missing certain prerequisite files... sure, you could get those necessary files if you wanted to, but in your case you don't want/need them anyway). It's annoying either way...
A pirated version could be found on any torrent site. It will work right out of the box... Or in this case, right off of the USB stick/CD (since you'd be "burning" the copy of Windows 7 to some form of storage device). The "extra files" I mentioned would only be needed if you decided to upgrade to Windows 10. Otherwise, you'd never miss them or even notice they aren't there. I've used this exact torrent before to reinstall windows for friends: https://kat.cr/windows-7-all-in-one-pre-activated-excellent-t7661549.html It's honestly a 4 step program: 1) Download torrent 2) Download program that "burns" .iso files to storage devices http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/windows-usb-dvd-download-tool <--- Microsoft official site (the download link isn't on this page... it's in the link I've posted below this one... You can actually ignore this link unless you want to read it) http://wudt.codeplex.com/ <--- Not Microsoft's official site, but they store the "downloader" on this site for easy access (the download link is the purple box) 3) "Burn" .iso file to the storage device (it can be a USB stick/DVD or CD... as long as it's 4 GB or up) 4) To install, just find the storage device inside of My Computer (or wherever it is in Windows... It will show up in the same place that a normal USB or CD does) and then run the installer. There's another method (which I find easier) where you restart your computer (with the USB stick or CD already in it) and then change the "boot order" of your computer (you would change it to either USB first or CD first, depending if you've used a USB or CD)... It will make the computer run the installation immediately instead of "booting into" Windows as it normally would. EDIT: I noticed I've used DVD/CD interchangeably in this post... Either work... As long as they are over 4 GB it doesn't matter which.
Why reinstall windows? The fix has been posted; Go to the link in post #2, download the remove_crw.cmd, unzip it, run it. (might have to right click - run as administrator). After that; go to start (win7), right click on computer, select manage, expand Services and Applications, click services, scroll down to Windows Update, Right click - Stop, Right Click - Properties, Start type: DISABLE, apply.
Thanks! I forgot to mention that. If you don't disable Windows Update, it just re-installs the updates that have been pre-installed BEFORE you uninstalled them on it's own. ...Creepyyyy! You don't need to do all that really. If all you want to do is get rid of the Windows 10 nagware/adware/spyware/communist propaganda, just look up 'Remove GWX' or 'Avoid Windows 10' ...something along those lines. If you know how to work with Windows Update, there are some KB files in there (which I'll post) that are directly related to the Windows 10 upgrade. I've heard that too, about people losing all their personal files because Microshaft forced the Win10 update upon them. Even so far as disabling their computers entirely because they didn't meet the Windows 10 system requirements. GWX is one hell of a shitty mess and Microsoft should be utterly ashamed of themselves for all this garbage. (Obamacare anyone???) The easier way to feel more at ease is to invest in an external hard drive... or an extra internal drive if you're computer can handle it and has the right equipment for it. External drive enclosures are pretty neat too! If you go that route, you can just buy a whole stack of hard drives and swap them out for organization. It's sort of the redneck way to go, but it works! If you can't duck it...
Okay, I will read through these replies tomorrow when I'm more focused and able to absorb the information.
If anything, I could walk you through how to uninstall the updates regarding Windows 10 upgrade via PM.
If you have a Windows installation ISO file, you could always use a USB boot disk installer. Personally, I like YUMI. It has the ability to create a multi-boot disc image system on USB! Relatively easy to use as well! http://www.pendrivelinux.com/yumi-multiboot-usb-creator/ There's also Rufus, WinToFlash and a few others out there. http://www.howtogeek.com/127377/the-best-free-tools-for-creating-a-bootable-windows-or-linux-usb-drive/ Speaking of WinToFlash, I feel like I'm having a flashback. I've talked about this here before somewhere Yumi is fantastic imo. You can use a flash drive to install Windows AND have a rescue disc with a plethora of tools on it all on one drive!
Wow, that is so kind of you to offer. I still haven't had time to read through this thread, but once I do, and once I figure out how I plan to proceed with solving this problem, I may take you up on that. Would it be at all possible for me to call you, so you can walk me through over the phone?
