as to what some have said about crashes ... any program can crash on any operating system if there's a bug in the program. it's almost always because of a memory error (pointer referencing an illegal/invalid memory location or going off the end of an array and corrupting memory), it's the operating systems job to terminate the process which is normally what people refer to as a program crash. some other types of bugs like memory leaks can cause the program to consume more and more memory until the whole system becomes unresponsive as it starts swapping everything out to disk. Logic errors can cause a hung program in some cases where some condition occurs and isn't handled correctly. this can happen on any operating system. if u can find the offending process and kill it everything will usually be fine after that, rebooting is for pussies :p operating systems components themselves have bugs too tho, they all do.

video stuff seems to have the most potential to to fuck things up, some (bad) code can fuck up the display and cause corrupted graphics ( bad video mode ) so that you can't really see well enough to fix it so a restart might be needed.

I wanna try the original "windows", I guess it was windows 1 just cuz I never got to try it and wanna see what it was like. earliest "windows" OS I ever used was win95. any computers I ever used before that didn't have any windows or graphics to speak of except some games that had really primitive monochrome graphics on a green screen.

which makes me think about the fact that I can make my terminal text any color I want including green (I like light blue right now), but it really doesn't compare to how remember text actually looked on a true monochrome CRT monitor where the only color it's capable of is green or at most a few colors (like 4 different colors)

internet wouldn't be a big deal, just wanna fuck around ya know?

win3.x came before 95 iirc so that sounds right.

it might be tricky to get win1.0 to run on modern hardware since it's a 16-bit OS. i think there's still 16-bit support in modern CPUs but some of the other modern hardware probably wouldn't work. it might work in a virtual machine.

either way, you'd only be able to see 1MB of RAM, cuz 1MB is the biggest memory address you can have with 16 bit memory addresses (segmented addresses, 16bit pointer, 16bit segment offset .. biggest address you can put in a 16bit pointer is 64k which gives you a 1MB maximum using segmented addresses.).

i can't see how web browsing would be a great experience with that little memory anyway.

The original "Windows" was a graphical interface that ran on top of DOS....

late 2015. it will be a free upgrade for win7/8.1 users. maybe it'll be a good gaming OS, i've only tried it in a VM (tech preview) and haven't tried any games cuz i know the performance would be poor in a virtualized environment.

i don't really play PC games anymore, but I used to be into them and sometimes i get into it for a while.

Windows for life here. I tried Linux but don't have time to figure out how to work a new OS, being comfortable with Windows. I love dual booting and messing with just about everything until I break it, then it gives me something to fix :D

Android's fun, but it sure ain't no Windows haha.

@ace_k Thank you for the info on Windows 10. I believe that by the time it is available to the general public the problems with Lenovo will be over and I can have a new system, faster than this Lenovo SL 510 with a Centrino processor.

I run win 3.11 in virtual PC and have no problems getting online, e-mail, etc.
holding off malicious attacks, well that's another story, why I only run it in a virtual machine. ;)

getting sound hardware to work has always been a pain though.

    I can even browse the forums;

man that's an old pic, pre-dates the birth of Noxious even.

and as you can see by the thread title, this is an old topic...

I was so bloody mad when win 95 replaced the 3.1 file manager with explorer. Since then and having learned to live with 95 explorer, I still have to deal with Microsoft butchering explorer's functionality on every God damn new release of windows. Win 7 explorer is still driving me insane.

And I just know somebody's going to read this and think I'm talking about Internet Explorer!
    Fuck IE all together!

Windows Update: New version of Internet Exploiter :D

I'm Windows for life right now. I'm sticking with Windows 7 until Microsoft realizes what they're doing though.

I have been experimenting with Linux Live USB tho. Still can't figure out how to do anything w Linux tho. I think my WiFi card might be unsupported in Linux.

you know, the older I get, the more I realize that operating systems are just that.. operating systems.

a lot of things about LINUX, contrary to what the general consensus may be, in my mind are more userfriendly. MAN pages are great, and also a sane system of storing config data (no windows registry). coding on linux seems a lot more intuitive and straightforward. windows may appear more simple outwardly, but from the point of view of a programmer it seems to involve extra complexity and more boilerplate code. I'll make it a point though some time to get at least a little familiar with the winapi though, cuz though some things are different, there are a lot of things that are always pretty much the same ... and those things are the things that should be taken note.

thats what i run, though i run i3 instead of lxde ... lxde is still installed. i dont see much difference between the different *buntus except right out of the box ... lubuntu comes with ALSA instead of pulseaudio. not that much different too much versus debian. i think ubuntu is a good distro, i know some people wont agree ... its not perfect but i like the ubuntu repos. i think ubuntu proper is kinda bloated which is why i prefer lubuntu and just installing anything else myself. iirc the whole installation image fits on a regular CD (not a dvd).

for linux VMs i pick debian 7 ... not sure i really have a good reason for that except for the fact that its a good "full" distro and runs good allocating only 256Mb memory which opens the possibility of running multiple instances concurrently on the same machine. 5 Gb of harddrive space is plenty for this purpose ...

usb sticks/ "live" linux i usually use puppy or kali linux...
